THE LAST LONG EARS LADY
For the Dayak people in the upper Mahakam River, East Kalimantan, tradition and culture are still inherent in their daily lives in order to continue the traditions of their ancestors when living in the world. Starting from how to manage the land with its rituals because of the belief in the existence of spirits in heaven who always watch over their lives.
Culture for Dayak women includes beliefs when it comes to beautifying themselves. They do so with tattoos and long ears. In Mahakam Ulu Regency, there are still many long-eared women with silver or iron hoop earrings that dangle to the shoulder.
For the Bahau Dayak community, especially the Bahau Long Gelaat tribe in Long Tuyoq village, an area located deep in the heart of Borneo in the East Kalimantan region, most of the elderly women there still carry out this long-eared tradition, which in the local language is commonly referred to as telingaan aruuk.
