KUMBANG 2022: DISCUSSION ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIODIVERSITY CAMPAIGN STRATEGIES THROUGH DIGITAL MEDIA
Kumpul dan Belajar Bareng (KUMBANG) is an annual discussion, capacity building, and consolidation activity organized by the Youth and Education Program, WWF Indonesia Foundation, involving Earth Hour Indonesia and Marine Buddies volunteers from all over Indonesia. This year, 30 volunteers from 22 cities, including Banda Aceh, Semarang, Putussibau, Palopo, and Jayapura. The volunteers gathered at Pondok Rasamala, Bogor, to discuss various things, including work program plans for the next year, campaign strategies, and material about biodiversity that sustains human life, in line with the theme "Unity in Biodiversity". In this year's event, materials were delivered by various experts, including Prof. Jatna Supriatna from RCCC University of Indonesia; biodiversity expert, Sunarto; and Spatial Planning and Biodiversity Leader of Heart of Borneo program,Thomas Barano.
KUMBANG 2022 was opened with a virtual welcome from the CEO of WWF Indonesia Foundation, Aditya Bayunanda, and continued with an update on conservation and the role of youth presented by Diah R. Sulistiowati, team leader of WWF Indonesia's Youth & Education Program. After group division and introduction games, the last session of the first day was a discussion on the obstacles faced during Earth Hour Indonesia and Marine Buddies volunteers running the program in their respective regions.
The second day of KUMBANG 2022 started with a Field Trip (outbound games)and continued with a material session on Biodiversity Index for Regional Development and SDGs Achievement with Prof. Jatna Supriatna who was connected virtually. In this session, Prof. Jatna said that public involvement is needed to report and monitor the development of animals spread across various regions in Indonesia. The public needs to be involved in this process because the benefits of biodiversity are not only for the government and scientists, but also for the people themselves.
Continued with the material Plastic Smart Cities by Tri Agung Rooswiadj, it was explained that the threat to biodiversity caused by plastic waste is due to the difficulty of recycling plastic waste so that many species of living things whose habitats are contaminated by this waste. Therefore, building public awareness about the dangers of plastic waste is the first stage that must be done to reduce the adverse effects of plastic waste.
The presentation continued with an explanation of the Heart of Borneo program by Thomas Barano where it was explained that the Heart of Borneo is a conservation area located on the island of Kalimantan, which was declared by three countries namely Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia. The utilization of ecosystems in the Heart of Borneo area is ensured to adhere to sustainable principles. The next session was the Innovation App Workshop with Ndaru W. Ciptaningsih, team leader of People & Culture of WWF Indonesia Foundation. In this session, participants were invited to discuss innovation in the community. Next, a discussion about the form, role, and legality of the Earth Hour Community and Marine Buddies with Zefanya Yoyanda Siahaan who was present directly on the spot. Through this discussion, it was explained about the different forms of legality that are considered suitable and needed by the Earth Hour Indonesia community. The second day was closed with a light talk session related to the progress of each city.
The third day started with a team building activity guided by Bang Ipul and his team with various games, such as moving ball, puzzle, and interview. After the team building activity, participants received material on National Tracking System delivered by Sunarto and Digital Communication by Dewi Satriani. In his material, Sunarto conveyed about the existing trail system in Indonesia which needs to be improved for accessibility for various communities to improve the quality of life of the community, as well as the discovery of biodiversity. In the Digital Communication material, Dewi Satriani conveyed about Earth Hour Indonesia which acts as WWF's main weapon in partnership content which can reach a wider community. With a wider reach, it will certainly be beneficial in delivering conservation messages to a wider audience. Hopefully, this session can turn interest into action and change the system to a more digitalized direction in response to the widespread development of the times.
In the afternoon, the event continued with the explanation of Earth Hour Indonesia's dashboard, presentation of EH and Ocean Week 2022 ideas, focus group discussion, and discussion of Earth Hour Indonesia's national material issues which included projects, targets per city and details of the national project timeline. The event was closed with a creative night filled with karaoke and fashion show competitions that showcased the diversity of Indonesian culture from Sabang to Merauke.
Through this KUMBANG activity, it is hoped that Earth Hour Indonesia and Marine Buddies volunteers will be able to gain capacity building related to the environment and biodiversity, as well as have the ability to conduct strategic campaigns that are right on target.
