HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELEPHANT RIMBANI!
By: Natalia Trita Agnika
Today, June 1, exactly one year ago, a baby elephant, Rimbani was born in Tesso Nilo National Park (TNTN), Pelalawan Regency, Riau. She is the third calf from a mother elephant named Lisa who has been a member of the Elephant Flying Squad since April 2004. Lisa is tasked with patrolling for human-elephant conflict management around TNTN. The Tesso Nilo elephant enclave has the highest population in Riau. In 2011-2014, elephant mortality in this area was high due to conflict and poaching. In fact, some individual male elephants lost their tusks to poachers by being shot or poisoned.

Like a one-year-old, Rimbani's elephant calf is looking cute. Her adorable behavior has made many people fall in love and captivated. One of them is Rimbani's behavior while learning to swim with her mother. With her cute trunk, Rimbani tries to hold on to her mother.

Now at the age of one, Rimbani has become more independent. This little elephant can eat by herself, fetch her own food, and drink by herself. She can pluck grass with her trunk. This independence is a positive thing so that elephants can survive in their habitat.
The birth of Rimbani's elephant a year ago was quite special because it was the first time an elephant's birth had been recorded so well. The birth process was monitored through CCTV that had been installed in a place that had been prepared to welcome the birth of the elephant calf at Camp Elephant Flying Squad. Rimbani's name was given to her by Vice President Jusuf Kalla with new hope for elephant conservation in Indonesia, especially in Tesso Nilo.
ELEPHANT WARRIOR!
