FIVE YEARS OF CLIMATE SOLUTIONS PARTNERSHIP: DRIVING INDUSTRY DECARBONIZATION AND COLLABORATION IN INDONESIA
Jakarta, June 12, 2025 - WRI Indonesia, WWF-Indonesia, and PT Bank HSBC Indonesia ("HSBC Indonesia") share the results of five years of collaboration through the Climate Solutions Partnership ("CSP"), a program aimed at driving the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Indonesia with a primary focus on the industrial and commercial sectors.
Thus, industrial decarbonization is important to meet climate targets and open up green job opportunities in the global market. This is in line with the Government of Indonesia's target of reducing Greenhouse Gas ("GHG") emissions by 31.89% through Enhanced National Determined Contributions (ENDC)..
Over the past five years, CSP has conducted a series of capacity-building and technical assistance sessions for industrial companies on ways to reduce emissions in their operational systems. In addition, in collaboration with an apparel company, the program also conducted energy efficiency and renewable energy use trials in the industrial sector. Furthermore, the program also developed guidelines for transitioning to renewable energy, policy recommendations for emission reduction, and capacity building for national banks to provide low-carbon financing solutions
The development of the energy transition guidelines provides a practical reference that can help the industrial sector in its adoption process. The guidelines are then reinforced with policy recommendations to ensure that the technical guidance can be applied through appropriate regulatory encouragement so that implementation is sound and scalable.
"One of the biggest lessons from CSP is that transition cannot be driven by one uniform approach. Every sector, even every company, has different contexts and challenges, and that's where adaptive, data-driven solutions are important. Through a collaborative approach, we see how companies can start moving, even from very diverse starting points, towards a more structured and sustainable decarbonization path," said Arief Wijaya, Managing Director of WRI Indonesia.
In addition, the energy transition to net-zero cannot be separated from the protection of nature and biodiversity. Aditya Bayunanda, CEO of WWF-Indonesia emphasized the importance of biodiversity in the energy transition, "Without a well-maintained ecosystem, achieving the net zero target is difficult. Therefore, we support the implementation of biodiversity protection in both renewable energy development and other decarbonization efforts. For example, the development of biomass conversion guidelines[2] that we developed aims to use it not only to reduce GHG emissions, but also to maintain the ecosystem at large," he said.
The CSP program reflects HSBC's ambition to support high-potential but not yet commercially attractive early-stage energy transition initiatives through corporate philanthropy initiatives.
"We are proud to support the Climate Solutions Partnership as part of our commitment to driving innovation and financing that accelerates the adoption of renewable energy in the industrial sector. This initiative can contribute to Indonesia's efforts towards its net-zero target. While there is still much work to be done going forward, this step shows that success can be achieved if all stakeholders share the same goal," said Francois de Maricourt, President Director, HSBC Indonesia.
