COMMUNICATING WHILE PROTECTING THE EARTH THROUGH LINE APPS
Jakarta, April 22, 2013. Nature preservation is all mankind’s responsibility. The effort to preserve nature can also be creative and fun. WWF-Indonesia in partnership with LINE PLUS Corporation will launch a creative effort to support conservation in Indonesia, such as Orangutan, through stickers. Currently, sticker use in mobile messaging industry has been a new trend, by using images as emotion or thought reflection.
On this year’s Earth Day, in partnership with WWF-Indonesia, LINE will launch 8 free stickers, for which LINE will donate US$0.1 (IDR 1,000) /download to WWF-Indonesia. Moreover, LINE will also launch 24 other stickers for US$0.99 (IDR 9,000)/download, with all the income from the sales will be donated to WWF-Indonesia.
“This partnership aims to raise public awareness and understanding about the importance of Orangutan conservation, and the programs in WWF-Indonesia. Hopefully, the launch of these stickers will facilitate all parties who aspire to help conserving this charismatic species that has been critically endangered,” said Devy Suradji, Marketing Director of WWF-Indonesia.
LINE will also open an Official Account for WWF-Indonesia. It is the first LINE’s Official Account for NGOs. Through this Official Account, LINE users will receive the latest updates directly from WWF-Indonesia.
“We have decided to kick off this Orangutan preservation campaign out of our genuine desire to do something good for the local community to give back the love that we have received from the Indonesian users”, said Cho Simeon, General Manager of LINE Global Business. “We can only make this campaign possible with support of LINE users in Indonesia. Therefore, LINE and WWF will create many opportunities to engage our users by helping them understanding the dire need for Indonesia’s Orangutan conservation,” he added.
There are two Orangutans subspecies in Indonesia, Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelli) and Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). The IUCN Red List has classified the Sumatran Orangutan as critically endangered species – approximately 7,300 individuals in the wild – and the Bornean Orangutan as endangered species – approximately 45,000-69,000 individuals in the wild. Both subspecies are threatened by habitat loss caused by deforestation, poaching and illegal wildlife trade.
Orangutans are one of key species in forest conservation, since they act as seed distributors in nature’s food chain. Hence, the benefit of orangutan conservation goes beyond species conservation to keep the balance and diversity of floras in the forests, while not just for ensuring the forests sustainability, but also the community sustainability – which they are depending their livelihood on the forests resources.
