CLIMATE CHANGE MESSAGES FROM THE WORLD'S CULTURAL HERITAGE
Prambanan, March 15, 2016 - The global movement for climate change, Earth Hour again reminds the importance of changing lifestyles for the preservation of the earth. Earth Hour 2016, which falls on Saturday, 19 March, at 20.30-21.30 local time, in Indonesia will be marked by the participation of two world-renowned Indonesian icons, Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple.
From these two world cultural heritage sites, Earth Hour Indonesia voices this year's global Earth Hour theme 'Shine A Light on Climate Action'. This theme invites global citizens to make Earth Hour a celebration to take action in the face of climate change. Through the symbolization of turning off lights and electronic equipment that are not in use for 1 hour, we are all expected to have a real commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"It is still fresh in our memories about the Paris Agreement reached at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP 21 -red) at the end of 2015. Earth Hour is a reminder of the efforts needed by individuals, governments and corporations as a contribution to curbing the rate of climate change," said Dr. Efransjah, CEO of WWF Indonesia. Climate change is a real threat to the preservation of our natural wealth, biodiversity and survival. "The participation of two icons of world cultural heritage, Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple, is a symbol for us to realize that we are not only inherited by nature that is so rich and beautiful but also must be able to inherit a sustainable planet earth to our children and grandchildren," added Dr. Efransjah.
In addition to these two global icons, at least 70 icons supported by 37 Earth Hour Indonesia communities in various cities will also mark Indonesia's participation in this year's Earth Hour. On Sunday, March 13, 2016, Earth Hour Indonesia communities in 19 cities have carried out simultaneous actions in the Car Free Day (CFD) area of their respective cities to voice concern for climate change. The participation of Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple in Earth Hour 2016 is fully supported by PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (Persero), Borobudur and Prambanan Conservation Center, and UNESCO. The Earth Hour celebration at Borobudur Temple on March 19 will be centered at Aksobya Field starting at 19.30 WIB.
"We support the Earth Hour movement with the spirit of preserving the world's cultural heritage from the effects of climate change. The participation of Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple is an important symbol of Indonesia's voice and commitment as part of the global community," said Edy Setijono, President Director of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (Persero).
Earth Hour Indonesia this year also received support from Twitter Indonesia. On the night of Earth Hour, Twitter users can follow the switch-off procession at Borobudur Temple via Periscope.
The Earth Hour Indonesia community also opens opportunities for public participation to support 4 forest greening conservation activities by donating through the Earth Hour Indonesia community's crowdfunding program on the http://earthhour.kitabisa.com.
