BMP TUNA FISHERY
Author: Maskur Tamanyira (Seafood Saver Officer, WWF-Indonesia)
Better Management Practices (BMP), Small Scale Fisheries Guidance Series, Tuna Fisheries, is one of the capture fisheries guidelines compiled by the WWF-Indonesia Fisheries Team and published in 2015. Tuna BMPs can be used as a guide for fishers in conducting tuna fishing with more environmentally friendly practices. This is not only in the interest of maintaining the sustainability of the marine ecosystem and the sustainability of fisheries resources, but also ensuring the sustainability of fishermen's livelihoods.
The preparation of the Tuna Fisheries BMP was carried out through various stages, namely:
- Data collection from the field and mentoring activities for tuna fishermen with handline fishing gear (handline) in Solor, Alor, and Wakatobi;
- Discussion with the government, several tuna and handline gear experts, and academics;
- Literature study of other research results.
This BMP is a flexible (living document), which will continue to be refined in accordance with developments in the field, as well as input from relevant parties. Tuna Fisheries BMP is one of WWF-Indonesia's contributions in supporting sustainable fisheries management in Indonesia.
