GAMES AS A METHOD OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
By: Muhammad Azhari Lubis (Panda Mobile Volunteer)
The kindergarten children of Salwa Islamic School who were playing the giant cranklek owned by WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile in November 2015, looked very happy. While occasionally laughing, they jumped according to the number of dice that came out. When they stopped at one of the boxes, my friends and I Voluntary Panda Mobile read out information about the life cycle of sea turtles, their food and habitat. Yes, we were doing a giant turtle-themed game of cricket, which is one of the signature activities at Panda Mobile visits.
One of Panda Mobile's methods of educating children about the environment is through games. In this way, they can play while learning. Children can also get closer to nature through information provided by volunteers. The happy mood makes the information more quickly absorbed. After doing this game, it is hoped that a great interest will arise and increase a sense of concern for preserving the environment.
Panda Mobile itself has a variety of games activities, including games cranklek (turtle, orangutan, and tiger themes), games snakes and ladders with elephant themes, games quartet cards, games forest police, ecosystem cycle games, and many more. The games include explanations on how to play them as well as information on nature and the environment. Panda Mobile's volunteers are there to assist and relay the information contained in the games to the children.
One of Panda Mobile's games that is also a favorite among children is the elephant-themed snakes and ladders.
Games is a simple way of learning about nature, animals, and the environment. Through this game, we also simultaneously teach children to always remember traditional games and always preserve them, just as nature and the environment must always be preserved.
