GETTING TO KNOW EARTH HOUR WITH PANDA MOBILE
By: Pratama Aditya Haryanto (Panda Mobile Coordinator)
Last Friday (24/03), WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile for the first time introduced Earth Hour at SD Al-Hikmah in Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta. The Panda Mobile activity took place with the help of volunteers from SMA Madania. Through this visit, the students of SD Al-Hikmah are expected to understand more about the condition of the surrounding environment and various conservation efforts to preserve it. One of the small steps that students can take is to join the Earth Hour campaign held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 by turning off lights and electronic equipment that are not in use for one hour.
Around 300 students of SD Al-Hikmah participated in the Panda Mobile activity. They were accompanied by their teachers. They were very enthusiastic to get information about conservation efforts carried out by WWF-Indonesia. Kak Ryan started the series of Panda Mobile activities by telling a story about protected umbrella animals.
After that, they followed the activities in parallel according to their respective classes. Since the theme was about Earth Hour, the activities also focused on energy saving that can be done by the public in everyday life.
In the movie shown on the Panda Mobile truck, the students were also introduced to climate change conditions and also about the benefits of water for alternative energy. The games conducted were also energy-themed. Through the game "Energy Vampire", students are invited to realize the actions of humans who often waste energy that makes the earth damaged. Damaged environmental conditions also affect the supply of clean water which is starting to decrease and its quality is decreasing. They learned this through activities carried out using the water laboratory facilities at Panda Mobile.
At the end of the event, the students were invited to express their ideas to reflect on what they got during the Panda Mobile activity. The children were enthusiastic in expressing their opinions individually in front of the class. The values embedded in the students of SD Al-Hikmah are expected to change the attitude of public indifference to the surrounding environment.
The Panda Mobile visit ended with a closing speech from student representatives who expressed their gratitude for the material provided by Panda Mobile volunteers. The activities carried out by Panda Mobile are highly appreciated and are expected to visit again to deliver material for other Al-Hikmah units, such as kindergarten and junior high school.
