"MAGIC PAPER", THE MAGIC PAPER TO KNOW THE PH OF WATER
By: Muhammad Azhari Lubis (volunteer Panda Mobile) & Natalia Trita Agnika
On Wednesday (02/11), Panda Mobile visited Cambridge Child Development Center, Depok, to educate kindergarten students about animals, especially endangered ones. The activity began with the introduction of the Panda Mobile team, WWF-Indonesia, and six species of umbrella animals protected by WWF-Indonesia to the children.
To make the students more excited, the volunteers invited them to do ice breaking first.
The next activity was a presentation on water. In this presentation, the students were introduced to dirty (polluted) water and water that can be used (for drinking and bathing). There was something interesting when Panda Mobile volunteers invited the children to test the water quality by putting litmus paper into the water. The students called it "magic paper". Yes, magically, the litmus paper can change color when dipped in water.
Litmus paper or what Cambridge Child Development School students call "magic paper" is a chemical paper that will change color if dipped in an acidic or basic solution. The resulting color is strongly influenced by the pH (acidity) level in the existing solution. This paper itself is made from wood cellulose which is the main component of tree cell walls. There are two kinds of litmus paper. Red litmus in acidic solution will be red, in alkaline solution will be blue, and in neutral solution will be red. While blue litmus in an acidic solution will be red, in a basic solution it will be blue, and in a neutral solution it will be blue.< br />
When testing the water, there was one student who asked "Why can water be dirty?" One of Panda Mobile's volunteers answered by explaining that dirty water comes from polluted rivers (full of garbage, dirt, and waste). Through this activity, the students were also advised to always protect the water, for example by not throwing garbage into the river.
After testing the water quality, the children were invited to play orangutan cricket games. In this game, they were invited to play while getting to know the behavior of orangutan animals and their habitat.
