Jakarta (24/03)-Hundreds of communities consisting of students, college students, and community associations have expressed their commitment to take part in the Earth Hour global climate change campaign. Student community representatives from Yayasan Memajukan Ilmu dan Kebudayaan (YMIK) Senior High School, London School Public Relations, and Bakrie University Jakarta shared stories about their campaign activities during the "Earth Hour 2010 Media Briefing," Wednesday (24/03), at Alila Hotel, Central Jakarta.
"We are calling on building owners around the Kuningan area to turn off their lights on Saturday. We are targeting 60 office buildings along the area to participate in Earth Hour," said Rio, a voluntary campaigner from Bakrie University.
Rio added that his team has also succeeded in recruiting 204 students on campus to become Earth Hour volunteers to help disseminate Earth Hour information both in the campus environment and in their communities while also urging building owners to turn off their lights on March 27.
Support has also come from community associations. Green Map is planning to tour Jakarta by cycling and the Bike to Work (B2W) community will also hold a similar action in the capital by mobilizing all of its members. Communities in Jakarta are also planning to take part in the event.
Not only in Jakarta, communities in three other major cities namely Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Bali will also hold symbolic actions as a form of their support for the Earth Hour campaign.
