GETTING TO KNOW FOREST BIODIVERSITY WITH PANDA MOBILE
By: Pratama Aditya Haryanto and Natalia Trita Agnika
In early June, Panda Mobile visited two junior high schools in Tangerang and South Jakarta. The first school visited by the Panda Mobile team was Athalia Junior High School, BSD on Thursday (04/06). The visit of WWF-Indonesia's six-wheeled educational truck at this school is the first time.
With the theme of forests, the volunteers explained the current state of Indonesia's forests and the condition of the flora and fauna that live there. To make it clearer, the students were invited to watch a movie about the forest followed by a discussion about how to preserve the forest. The atmosphere became more interesting when the students expressed their imagination through the "Space Ship" game. They were asked to describe what objects would be brought into the space ship to be saved when the Earth was destroyed. Various imaginations emerged through their drawings.
Not only getting information and developing imagination, the participants consisting of 7th and 8th grade students also practiced directly one of the ways to preserve nature through 3R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) activities. They were taught how to make bags from used t-shirts. This activity has two benefits at once; first, turning used items into more useful objects. Second, it is a real action to reduce the use of plastic bags.
The following week, on Wednesday (10/06), the Panda Mobile team visited the Australian International School (AIS) in Pejaten, West Jakarta. Panda Mobile's second visit to the school was at the invitation of the school, which was holding a monthly program entitled "Rainforest Month". Therefore, the volunteers gave a presentation about the rainforest and its biodiversity. The Panda Mobile team also introduced the students about WWF as a conservation organization and its history.
One of the most interesting things for the students was when the volunteers explained about the camera trap used by researchers to observe the behavior of wildlife in their natural habitat. They seemed enthusiastic to know firsthand how this surveillance camera works.
Other environmental activities that the 8th grade AIS students participated in were watching the video "Animal Equality with Humans" and a video about human regret when the Earth is on the verge of destruction. The students asked various questions after participating in these activities. "Apart from protecting the environment, what can we do to save the Earth?" asked one student curiously. The volunteer replied that one of the ways to contribute to efforts to save the Earth is to become a WWF-Indonesia Supporter.
