WWF-INDONESIA AND TAKA FOUNDATION HOLD TRAINING ON SUSTAINABLE CRAB FISHERIES
by Davidson Ratonono
Last January together with TAKA Foundation, WWF held a training on Sustainable Crab Fisheries in Mojo Village, Pemalang Regency. The training was attended by 25 fishermen from the Lestari Crab Fishermen group. The training is part of the fisheries improvement program for fishermen assisted by JARING-Nusantara members.
The training began with a simulation of sustainable versus non-sustainable fisheries aimed at providing fishermen with insights into the utilization of well-managed and poorly managed fisheries. The simulation provides awareness of fisheries actors to pay attention to aspects of sustainability (sustainable) in every fishing practice, such as rules for fishing rates that are balanced with nature's ability to produce fish resources. The simulation ended with a positive response from the fishermen who were able to summarize the purpose of the simulation.
After the simulation, socialization of post-catch handling and product packaging according to quality and health standards was conducted by PT. Panda Lestari represented by Ranggi Fajar. So far, fishermen have been severely disadvantaged by non-transparent and unbalanced prices by collectors, so fishermen feel disadvantaged and want to immediately conduct a trial business transaction with PT. Panda Lestari.
In this training activity, WWF-Indonesia and TAKA Foundation committed to jointly try to use mangrove crab catch records using android tabs which are grants from Google. The trial of catch recording and traceability of capture commodities using this android device will be carried out using several applications, the results of which will be replicated to several types of capture fisheries commodities in other JARING-Nusantara assisted fishermen.
