THE USE OF OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE IN MINING SECTOR ESG MONITORING
The mining sector plays a strategic role in Indonesia's economic development, but it also carries environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks. Impacts on landscapes, water sources, indigenous territories, as well as the potential for social conflict and weak governance practices demand a transparent, independent and evidence-based monitoring system. In this context, Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is an important approach to expanding public access to information related to the ESG performance of the mining sector.
OSINT utilizes various open sources of information-such as satellite imagery, government documents, company reports, media reports, market data, and other digital footprints-to systematically identify, verify, and analyze ESG issues. This approach enables the public to track mining activities, their links to environmental and social change, and corporate governance commitments and practices, without relying entirely on data provided by businesses.
To support the widespread use of this approach, Auriga Nusantara developed an OSINT user guide module specifically designed for ESG monitoring in the mining sector. This module helps users understand the basic concepts of OSINT, recognize relevant open data sources, and learn practical steps in collecting, integrating and analyzing information from various sources.
The module also emphasizes the ethical aspects, verification, and limitations of OSINT data, so that monitoring results can be used responsibly and credibly. With this guide, civil society, journalists, researchers, and policymakers can utilize OSINT as a tool to strengthen public scrutiny, support evidence-based advocacy, and drive improvements in the accountability and ESG performance of the mining sector in Indonesia.
