TUNA TAGGING: PRIZE FOR THE DISCOVERER
On December 4-6, 2010 and March 18-31, 2011, WWF-Indonesia's Wakatobi MPA (Marine Protected Area) program in collaboration with WWF CTNI Philippines, MCSI USA, and SPC USA conducted a tuna tagging program in Wakatobi waters, Banda Sea, Southeast Sulawesi. In this tuna tagging program, 42 yellow fin tuna (yellow fin) were successfully tagged with 8 popup tags, 33 archival tags and 1 double tag (popup and archival on 1 tuna). There are 43 tags that have been installed. Each tuna tagged with an archival tag was also fitted with a tagging registration number.
Marine waters in Indonesia are tuna crossing areas from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean, especially in the eastern region, namely the Pacific Ocean north of Papua, Arafura Sea south of Papua, Sulawesi Sea, Banda Sea, Maluku Waters, Makassar Strait, Sawu Sea NTT, as well as in the Indian Ocean south of Java, Indian Ocean west of Sumatra.
Tuna fish are fast swimmers, pelagic in nature, and can cover large areas of the sea within a few days. Then to get the data on the archival tag, the marker must be returned to SPC USA so that the data can be downloaded. Therefore, it is requested that all parties disseminate this information as per the attached poster, especially to tuna fishers around their respective workplaces or domiciles. The tags can be removed easily, and fishers who return the tags will receive a reward, and the fish remains the right of the fishermen. This poster can be posted at the nearest Fisheries Marine offices, fishing ports, tuna landings, tuna fish collectors, and other relevant places, and include the address/contact person.
