Thursday (9/10) morning, the auditorium of Heritage International School Permata Hijau, Jakarta, was abuzz with the amazed expressions of the students of the elementary class. They were listening to a presentation by Iqbal Hanif, Coordinator of the Panda Mobile team. With the help of Kak DJ and Kak Cila, Kak Iqbal introduced WWF-Indonesia's conservation work in all corners of the archipelago. Iqbal closed his session by playing an animated movie about a simple green lifestyle that can be done everyday.
After listening to presentations from Kak Iqbal, Kak DJ, and Kak Cila, it was Kak Ryan's turn to tell stories. While playing his guitar, he successfully entertained the elementary and pre-school class students with the story of the Orangutan trapped in a plastic bag. Yes, the Orangutan accidentally got entangled in a plastic bag that was carelessly discarded near the forest. Fortunately, Elephant and Ocan were there, and the Orangutan was successfully removed from the plastic bag. Kak Ryan then explained to Heritage students to get used to throwing garbage in its place, and reduce the use of plastic bags because the material is difficult to be decomposed by nature.
In the next session, Kak DJ and Kak Cila taught how to make shopping bags from used newspapers. Heritage students were very enthusiastic about following Panda Mobile's guidance, while being assisted by their teachers. Some students even managed to make more than one bag.
One of them was Sam, a 6th grade student. "I will make more at home. It's a bit difficult, folding it. But I like making this," he said.
Leo Gautama, Science teacher for elementary class, appreciated the Panda Mobile team's visit that day. "Our input is to create materials that inspire children to love the natural environment around them more. What the team presented is already good, just need to be enriched."
The Panda Mobile team visit ended with a group photo. Holding their homemade bags, the students lined up while showing happy expressions. "Cheers!"
