By: Muhammad Azhari Lubis (Volunteer Panda Mobile)
There was something special about the Operation Save Nature (OPASELAM) organized by the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) on May 6-7, 2017. The event, which took place on Tidung Island, Kepulauan Seribu, also invited WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile. Panda Mobile team, PMI, and PMI volunteers traveled from Marina Harbor, Ancol at 08.30 WIB.
Upon arrival at Tidung Island, after lunch, the Panda Mobile team prepared the program for activities with the children of Tidung Island, precisely at the Children's Reading House. The activity started with ice breaking and introduction about WWF-Indonesia and the conservation efforts of six umbrella animals. They were then invited to watch the movies "Tiger Hunter", "We Are All Connected", and "Quartet at the Crossroads". At the end of the movie screening, the Panda Mobile team asked questions about the animals in the movie and the messages contained in it. The children were very enthusiastic in answering the questions. They also actively asked questions about the animals.
The issue of water, especially the availability of clean water was also carried by the Panda Mobile team. Children are invited to color pictures that tell a story about saving water. The coloring sheet is equipped with facts and invitations to save water or use water wisely. They were happy to get new information about water.
At the same time in a different room, the participants of OPASELAM were present to follow the activities of the Panda Mobile team. They gained insight into marine life, particularly coral reefs. Through a presentation, one of Panda Mobile's volunteers explained about the types of corals and fish. They were also taught how to be responsible marine travelers. Examples of environmentally friendly tourist behavior were also shown to them. A discussion with OPASELAM participants closed the presentation session. The children of Tidung Island, the OPASELAM participants, and the Panda Mobile team captured the moment with a group photo.
The next day, the activity continued with morning exercises together at the Tidung Island GOR field. PMI and volunteers also carried out mangrove planting activities on the coast of Tidung Kecil Island and beach cleanup on Tidung Island.
