PANDA MOBILE INTRODUCES UMBRELLA SPECIES AT JAKARTA NANYANG SCHOOL
By: Athirah Jacobach (Volunteer Panda Mobile)
On Thursday (13/09), WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile had the opportunity to introduce umbrella species to the 2nd grade students of SD Jakarta Nanyang School, BSD, Tangerang. Of the many animals categorized as protected, there is one called the umbrella species. What is meant by umbrella species is an animal with a very large range so that if the habitat of this umbrella species is protected, then other animals in its range will also be protected.
Through various interesting activities provided by the Panda Mobile team, students learned about the umbrella species, including elephants, tigers, whale sharks, sea turtles, orangutans, and rhinos. Through a story about orangutans and elephants who go on an adventure in search of clean water, the students of SD Jakarta Nanyang School are invited to preserve river water so that no more animals are thirsty.
They were also introduced to the shape of each animal through coloring activities. Each child got a picture of different animals. And in each picture there is a piece of the story about the animal they colored.
The next activity carried out with Panda Mobile was watching a video entitled "Quartet at the Crossroads" which tells the story of four umbrella animals that are the focus of WWF-Indonesia's conservation. The video tells the story of the animals losing their homes due to deforestation. Another video watched was "Plastic Planet" about the dangers of plastic waste, especially for marine wildlife.
The Panda Mobile team advised the Jakarta Nanyang School students to live a more environmentally friendly life, for example by utilizing used plastic bottles to make hydroponic planting media like the activity that was carried out that day. They are expected to share their experience and knowledge with Panda Mobile to the people around them to help protect umbrella species by living an environmentally friendly lifestyle.
