PANDA MOBILE EDUCATES GLOBAL JAYA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT WATER
By: Amelia Natasha Hilal (Volunteer Panda Mobile)
Not many students know that 72% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, but 97% of that water is salty and not good for drinking. And less than 1% of the world's drinking water is ready for direct use. Therefore, WWF-Indonesia's Panda Mobile team educated students at SD Global Jaya International School Bintaro, Tangerang, on Thursday (13/04) to get to know more about water so that they are wiser in using it.
The Panda Mobile visit was filled with a series of activities including storytelling, water labs, and watching movies. The activity began with an interactive storytelling about animals by Kak Ian. While telling the story, Kak Ian invited the students to demonstrate various types of animals according to the storyline. There was a scene when someone shot animals in the forest without caring about the consequences. He used the character of a wise red ant to explain the negative impact of poaching. The students were also invited to protect animals in their respective habitats.
Then the students were divided into two groups, each of which visited a different post. At the water laboratory post, the Panda Mobile team talked about the water cycle through pictures. The students were invited to find out the level of acidity or basicity (pH) of water using litmus paper and a pH meter. The water samples used are water around the school, namely from bottled drinking water, drinking water provided by the school, and drinking water from the fish pond. After that, the Panda Mobile team invited students to observe microbes in the water using a microscope. Through these activities, the students became more aware of maintaining cleanliness and using water as needed.
In the next post, the students were invited to watch several movies, including "Quartet at the Crossroads", "Domino", and "The World Where We Live". The films show facts about our world today so that it is hoped that students will become more understanding and aware of protecting the Earth.
