PANDA MOBILE INVITES TZU CHI SCHOOL STUDENTS TO BE COMPASSIONATE TO THE ENVIRONMENT
The Earth is a place where all living things live, grow, and develop. As one of the inhabitants of the Earth, humans should make efforts to conserve the environment, and strive for a decent living opportunity for other living things. By doing so, we have compassion for nature.
Compassion that combines empathy and sympathy is reflected in every environmental mission carried out by WWF-Indonesia, one of which is through the Panda Mobile activity. On February 24-25, 2019, the Panda Mobile team visited the Tzu Chi School in Jakarta to educate students from preschool and kindergarten classes about nature conservation and endemic Indonesian animals. Around 400 little participants were invited to get to know and understand nature through games, movies, and storytelling. This method is considered effective to convey positive messages to children.
In the movie screening session, the children listened to the spectacle presented by the Panda Mobile team. The description of animal life in the video entitled Jungle Forever was so imprinted on the minds of the children, that various questions arose from the point of view of the little participants. "Sis, is the tiger bad? He chases hunters to eat?" asked one child. Panda Mobile volunteers tried to set the record straight. "It's not evil, tigers are wild animals, so they get angry when their habitat is disturbed by humans. The forest is home for tigers, just like home for us. So if his house is destroyed by cutting down the trees or hunting the contents, the tiger will be angry," said one of the volunteers.
In addition to watching movies, Panda Mobile also invited child participants to recycle used goods. Actually, the activity of utilizing leftover household consumption is commonly carried out by Tzu Chi School students who are always taught about compassion for the environment. This time, Panda Mobile and Tzu Chi School students made a workshop in the form of a piggy bank from unused materials.
Historically, piggy banks are one of the works taught by Master Cheng Yen, the founder of the Tzu Chi Foundation. He made a bamboo piggy bank as a medium to collect compassion funds. So, this craft is considered appropriate for preserving culture in order to enliven the Chinese New Year. To interpret the nature of compassion for the environment, part of the funds collected from the bamboo piggy bank will be given to WWF-Indonesia for sea turtle conservation efforts.
The compassionate nature shown by the students of Tzu Chi School is a good thing that is instilled and made into a Buddhist philosophy of life. The manifestation of compassion can be realized by caring for fellow humans and the environment.
