THE PRINCIPAL LEADS FOR A SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL FUTURE
Global changes that occur very quickly cause every individual or community to be able to adapt to all conditions. At least in the last 5 years, issues such as the climate crisis that had an impact on various sectors, the Covid-19 pandemic, the development of artificial intelligence, and the massive spread of disinformation have brought every human being to be able to follow and be able to control the situation precisely and carefully.
At critical times, a leader is the foundation and hope. The right decision of the leader can bring the people to a safe situation. A competent leader is a leader who can get his organization to achieve its goals regardless of the many difficulties faced.
As a leader, the principal has the responsibility of directing, managing, and bringing the school he leads to progress which refers to the values embraced by his school. In addition, principals also have a role in monitoring and making policies that support positive school activities. To be a capable principal requires abilities such as making decisions quickly and accurately, and the ability to guide school members to achieve common goals.
Kuantan Singingi is one of the districts in Riau Province that has a strategic role in nature conservation because it is located flanked by many protected areas that serve as wildlife habitats. The district is also rich in local culture and traditions that are thick with abundant natural resources.
The training was held in Pekanbaru on March 5-6, 2024, and was delivered by Professor of Educational Technology at Riau University, Professor Dr. Mahdum, M.Pd, and Dr. Elfis as an educational practitioner from Riau Islamic University. On the first day, Professor Mahdum focused on coaching, mentoring, and brainstorming activities to open school principals' views and thoughts about sustainable leadership. The session was enthusiastic and energetic and filled with stories and experiences of principals' leadership. Some principals also did not hesitate to ask for input and solutions from the presenters to problems in their schools. For school principals, this kind of training that focuses on leadership soft skills has never been done so it is very useful for self-development and school leadership.
In this training, school principals also inventory sustainable issues (environmental, economic, and social) around the school and then try to integrate them into the design of school activities. It is hoped that this training can improve principals' leadership and knowledge of sustainable schools to realize a sustainable future.
