GREEN CAMP FOR A CHANGE IN CONSUMPTION ETHICS
Sungai Ambawang - WWF-Indonesia in collaboration with Pelita Cemerlang Pontianak School held an environmental camp or Green Camp 2017 for Pelita Cemerlang Junior High School students. The activity was held at Benuah Retreat House, Sungai Ambawang District, Kubu Raya, May 15-16, 2017.
Green Camp aims to develop Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in urban areas. In addition, this activity is also to build student awareness about the environment that can encourage changes in consumption ethics. Including teachers and parents, as well as shaping students' social character through out-of-school activities.
This activity was held based on a number of academic studies that mention the condition of natural resources is increasingly depressed. If there is no joint effort, the rate of damage will be unstoppable. Therefore, the education channel is considered as one of the entrances to answer this challenge.
"Through the framework of the ESD Program in WWF-Indonesia, we hope to encourage the birth of conservation champions who are smart, superior, and wise in utilizing and protecting natural resources, especially those in the West Kalimantan region for the welfare of the next generation," said West Kalimantan Program Manager, WWF-Indonesia, Albertus Tjiu.
The out-of-school activity that carries the theme Exploring Without Limits was attended by 53 students of grades VII and VIII of Pelita Cemerlang School. With a variety of material delivery related to environmental and conservation issues as well as an introduction to nature and the surrounding environment, it is hoped that students will have more concern for the sustainability of natural resources and the environment in the future.
"We welcome the collaboration with WWF-Indonesia as an organization engaged in conservation and its work is known globally. From this cooperation, we hope to realize a green school or an environmentally friendly school, starting from teachers, students, to parents," said Pelita Cemerlang Junior High School Principal Anselmus Ardhiyoga.
Albertus Tjiu said Green Camp is a form of environmental education that is introduced early to the younger generation. "The hope is that one day they can utilize natural resources wisely," he said in Pontianak, Sunday (05/14/2017).
According to him, there are many simple forms that can be applied directly in everyday life. For example, throwing garbage in its place, reducing, reusing, or recycling unused items. Furthermore, reducing the use of plastic bags, saving electrical energy, and other things related to consumption ethics. These are the changes that are expected to be achieved from this activity.
"Studying the surrounding nature is very important. It is a material for our reflection on the completeness of nature that has supported the lives of living things and all the biodiversity in it," added Anselmus.
