CLOSING THE EXPEDITION: BIRTHDAY CAKE AND LEBE BAE AWARDS
By: Nisa Syahidah (WWF-Indonesia)
That afternoon, the television room on the second floor of Menami was alive with laughter from the expedition participants. The entire team - both crew and researchers, sat in a circle and massaged each other's shoulders to the strumming of Om Ayom's (WWF-Indonesia) guitar.
Irwan (WWF-Indonesia) was fiddling with his laptop, showing video footage from the day we first met until we were about to part ways. The seventeen-day stake trip was finally officially closed by Om Khaifin and Mbak Novia (WWF-Indonesia).
Before the sun reached its highest point this morning, Menami had already docked back at Larantuka Harbor. Yes, today, the mission to sail East Flores in #XPDCALORFLOTIM has been completed. The research team has finalized the data, leaving three dive points that will be observed tomorrow by the part of the team that stayed longer.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, happy birthday. Happy birthday, to you," Kasman (Reef Check Indonesia) approached our crowd with a birthday cake with Doraemon in his hand.
Through the makeshift cake, we celebrated the expedition participants' birthdays that fell in March - April. There were many - Om Izaak (DKP NTT), Pak Rusydi (University of Muhammadiyah Kupang), Fikri (WWF-Indonesia), Sila (Reef Check Indonesia), as well as Captains Saleh and Sahdan, the crew of the Menami.
It didn't end there. On this last day, we also gave away prizes to lucky expedition participants. Since the first day of the expedition, whenever there was enough internet signal, teams raced to upload expedition moments to their Instagram with the hashtag #XPDCALORFLOTIM. Sila, Kasman (Reef Check Indonesia) and Mas Bima (Escapade) cheered when their names came out as winners of the Instagram competition, and received souvenirs with the panda logo.
There was one more thing. Since morning, we've been handing out voting papers for three categories of Lebe Bae Awards, as they're called. An award for those who are better - "lebe bae".
The first category is Lebe Bae Data Entry - the best data entry researcher in terms of commitment and timeliness of collection. The winner of this category was Mr. Rusydi (University of Muhammadiyah Kupang), who was designated by Mbak Novia's veto as data manager.
The second category was Lebe Bae at Sea- for the expedition team's flagship diver; the one who is "lebe bae" at sea, be it in terms of ability, skill, attitude, or level of good looks while at sea. For this category, Fikri (WWF-Indonesia) emerged as the winner of Menami's choice.
The third category is Lebe Bae Kalau Ada Dia - for the participant's choice of favorite heart, which if there is him, everything becomes better. Kusnanto (WWF-Indonesia), who was a daily source of laughter for the expedition participants, won this one.
That night we ate together at a restaurant not far from Larantuka harbor. They had not only Menami and its inhabitants, but also a corner of Larantuka city to remember later on.
