#BELIYANGBAIK FESTIVAL: INTRODUCING ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS TO THE PUBLIC

Last Saturday (08/08) afternoon, a group of young children were busy coloring and decorating Tessa's tissue core in the garden area of Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall, Tangerang. The cylindrical carton was transformed into a tiny pot with various decorations filled with plant seeds and planting media. Around them, parents were busy cheering them on and taking pictures with their cell phone cameras.
A mother named Intan waited for her young child. As she colored, the woman, who lives in the Ciputat area, listened to an explanation of Tessa Tissue, an FSC-certified product. "I often see the logo on the packaging, but I don't know what it means," she said. The FSC logo (Forest Stewardship Council) provides assurance that the product uses wood from legal sources, is made with rules that pay attention to natural sustainability, and does not harm the ecosystem. Many visitors did not know this before they came to the #BeliYangBaik Festival organized by WWF-Indonesia on August 8-9, 2015 at Bintaro Jaya Exchange Mall, South Tangerang.
Festival #BeliYangBaik is a campaign for the public to be more courageous in asking questions about the origin of the products they want to buy and introducing the public to products that have been certified environmentally friendly (eco-label), such as FSC, MSC, ASC, and RSPO. Various booths from corporate partners who are manufacturers of eco-labeled products also colored the festival, including Fish 'n Blues, Mother's Choice, Tissue Tessa, Lock&Lock, Toyota, Faber Castell, and Tetra Pak.
Carrying the concept of "Seafood Stall" and "Forest Stall", the bazaar at the #BeliYangBaik Festival featured products from the sea and forest. At the Seafood Savers booth, visitors were explained that the tuna was caught using a longline that does not damage coral reefs. To further attract visitors' attention, Chef Andrian Ishak, an expert in molecular gastronomy, conducted a cooking demonstration on the main stage. Andrian, who is also WWF's Champion for #SOSharks Campaign, cooked Smoke Tuna with Sambal Korek. The tuna he used was the product of "Fish 'n Blues" which is caught with environmentally friendly fishing gear by small-scale fishermen who are members of the JARING-Nusantara fostered group.
Chef Andrian said that he really liked that the day's event invited consumers to care more about the origin of the products they buy. According to him, consumers also have an important role in the preservation of nature. "Unfortunately, many people are less aware and don't even care where their fish comes from," he said.
Besides tuna, Chef Andrian also uses Mother's Choice margarine which is RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) labeled, or contains responsibly sourced palm oil. Chandra Widianata, Marketing Officer of Sinar Meadow as the producer of Mother's Choice, said that the public needs to be educated about the #BeliYangBaik Campaign. "We are very open to join campaign events like this," Chandra said.
The #BeliYangBaik festival that day was able to attract visitors in the family segment. Various interesting and educational activities for children were also held there. For example, the games cricket at Panda Mobile's booth taught children about orangutans. In addition, there was a workshop area where children learned to make tavip puppets from used plastic.
The whole family was entertained with environmental-themed Wayang Tavip performances. One of them is a story entitled "My Ancestors Were Sailors" which tells the story of the marine ecosystem and why we should choose seafood with clear sources.
As the night wore on, the atmosphere was made even warmer by the performance of Jamaica Café. Previously, the a cappella group talked about green lifestyle with Davina Hariadi, WWF-Indonesia Champion for #BeliYangBaik Campaign. Davina explained that by being a critical consumer and caring about the origin of the products we buy, we can encourage producers to produce environmentally friendly products. ""Simple things that we do everyday can save our planet,"" she exclaimed.
Iko and Anton, personnel of Jamaica Café, shared that they try to reduce plastic waste by using their own shopping bags or refusing to use plastic bags when shopping. Some other examples of green lifestyle that we can do everyday can be learned by downloading Green Lifestyle BBM Sticker. Apart from being a critical consumer in choosing good products, we can also take action to save the environment by becoming a WWF Warrior. You don't have to be a superhero to change the world for the better. We can start from ourselves.
