ABOUT MALUKU BARAT DAYA 

Southwest Maluku (MBD) is an archipelago of 48 islands, seven of which are among Indonesia's outermost islands. The total area of Southwest Maluku Regency is 72,427.2 km² with 88.1% of the area being water. Due to its remote geographical location in the Banda Sea, this region is known as the Forgotten Islands of Indonesia. However, this region has great potential as a marine biodiversity corridor in southern eastern Indonesia.

With this geographical location, the region is passed by various types of marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and dugongs. Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda). Sea turtles are also confirmed to be in the waters as well as laying eggs on some of the region's beaches. The fisheries commodities that are quite good are capture fisheries for small pelagic commodities (6,800 tons per year) and aquaculture for seaweed commodities (3,294 tons per year). Shark and ray utilization is also quite high as bycatch.

CONTRIBUTE TO CONSERVATION

Currently, Maluku Barat Daya District has contributed 1.3 million hectares or 4% of the total 32.5 million hectares target for marine protected areas in Indonesia.

WHAT WILL WE DO HERE?

We will support the management of 4 marine protected areas there, assistance and improvement of capture fisheries and seaweed cultivation, assistance with community-based tourism, monitoring the management of protected and endangered marine species.
