ABOUT ELEPHANT
There are 2 types of elephant species in Indonesia, those are Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) and the Borneon elephant (Elephas maximus borneensis). Based on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), both of them are Critically Endangered.
THE THREATS
The main threat to Sumatran Kalimantan elephants is the reduction of their habitat due to unsustainable logging activities, poaching, illegal trade, and forest conversion for plantations (palm oil and paper) on a large scale.
WHAT WE DO?
WWF-Indonesia’s had been created Elephants Friends Forum and Elephant Flying Squad or Elephant Patrol Team to increase the effectiveness of mitigating conflicts between humans and wildlife. We also provide training to increase the capacity of the human resources involved.
