Rizal graduated with a Bachelor of Marine Science from Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh in 2010. In 2008, Rizal began his career as a volunteer with the Wildlife Conservation Society - Marine Program as a socio-economic surveyor of weh island fishing communities then in 2009-2102, joined Flora Fauna International - Aceh Marine Program as a Field Assistant for the Fishermen's Community Economic Empowerment Program and strengthening the Panglima Laot Customary Institution in Iboih, Sabang and Simeulu. In 2012 - 2014, Rizal returned to work at Flora Fauna International - Aceh Marine Program as a Field Officer in Kepulauan Banyak, Aceh Singkil.
In 2015, Rizal joined WWF-Indonesia as a Community Rights Based Management Officer in the Inner Banda Arc Sub-seascape (IBAS) program and is based in Kei Kecil, Southeast Maluku. Rizal is responsible for institutional strengthening of local communities and indigenous peoples' institutions, strengthening the capacity and local rights of local communities, and ensuring the collaboration of local communities and indigenous peoples as well as the government in conducting marine conservation management activities in the Inner Banda Arc Sub-seascape.
During the Koon Expedition, Rizal was tasked with collecting information related to the profile of the fishermen groups assisted by WWF-Indonesia in Samboru Hamlet, Gorom Island and Grogos Island. In addition, for five days he also conducted organizational strengthening of the assisted groups.
