LET'S JOIN REEF HEALTH MONITORING KOON 2018 AS REEF FISH RECORDERS! (UPDATE ON VOLUNTEER SELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT)
By: Reef Health Monitoring Team Koon 2018.
WWF-Indonesia opens the opportunity for you to participate as a reef fish recorder in Reef Health Monitoring Koon 2018, an activity initiated by the USAID Sustainable Ecosystems Advanced (USAID SEA) Project. This activity is open to students from Fisheries, Marine, Ecology, and Biology majors as well as fresh graduates from these majors who already have a diving license. During the activity, vvolunteers will collect reef fish data at 25 dive sites and be placed in remote areas by participating in Coral Reef Health Monitoring (RHM) on April 9-22 at TPK Pulau Koon, Small Islands and Surrounding Waters. WWF-Indonesia will provide PP travel tickets from domicile to Koon Island, domestic travel insurance, and activity certificates.
Koon Island and Neiden Island located in Gorom Sub-district, East Seram Regency, Maluku Province have been reserved as a marine protected area (MPA) by the Regional Government of East Seram Regency. The 8,161.8 ha area has a relatively high fish population and supports the spread of fish larvae. To support the protection of this area, WWF-Indonesia initiated a Local Conservation Agreement (MCA) with Petuanan Adat Kataloka to manage an area of 2,537.6 ha located between Koon Island and Neiden Island in 2011-2015.
One of the indicators used to assess the effectiveness of an area's management is the health condition of its coral reef ecosystem. Baseline data (T0) on the condition of the coral reef ecosystem was collected in 2016. To see the effectiveness of the management of KKP3K Taman Pulau Kecil, Pulau Koon, Pulau-Patang Kecil dan Perairan Sekitarnya, it is necessary to collect the 2nd data (T1) which is ideally done every 2-3 years and will be done this year. This T1 data will then see the trend of change from 2016 (T0). The data collection method used refers to the Guidelines for the Effective Management of Marine, Coastal and Small Island Protected Areas (E-KKP3K) and the Coral Reef Health Monitoring Protocol compiled by Amkieltiela and Wijonarno (2015).
