WWF AND INDONESIA TATLER COLLABORATE IN A “TRIBUTE TO THE SEA” GALA TO RAISE AWARENESS OF MARINE CONSERVATION ISSUES
JAKARTA, 29 NOVEMBER 2013. Mobiliari Group, publisher of market-leading high-society magazine Indonesia Tatler, will hold this year’s Indonesia Tatler Ball in conjunction with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Indonesia. A synergy between WWF’s global fundraising gala called Panda Ball and Indonesia Tatler’s annual ball, the Indonesia Tatler-Panda Ball is to be held on November 29, 2013, at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta. The Ball is the highlight of the year’s social calendar and counts politicians, ambassadors, local dignitaries and other VVIPs among its guests.
The theme for the Ball is “A Tribute to the Sea”, since it is specifically aimed at raising awareness of the WWF’s Coral Triangle Program. The Coral Triangle is a geographical term that refers to a roughly triangular shape of marine waters between the Pacific and Indian oceans, and includes Indonesia within its boundary. This initiative is a partnership of six countries that was formed in 2007 to address urgent threats facing the coastal and marine resources of one of the most biologically diverse and ecologically rich regions on earth.
“After a three-year hiatus, this year is the right time to hold another Indonesia Tatler Ball, but we felt that we needed to focus attention on a cause close to our hearts. The WWF Coral Triangle Initiative is that cause,” said Mobiliari Group CEO and Founder Mrs Millie Stephanie.
“So much of our society revolves around the marine environment, from tourism to commerce to the food we eat. As a company with a strong CSR focus, it is appropriate that we draw attention to the plunder of our oceans that so often destroys this fragile environment. We have a duty to ourselves, to the planet and to our children to protect this precious natural resource.”
This Coral Triangle Program is not simply focused on the environment. According to WWF, some 130 million people in the region live in coastal communities and are directly dependent on the Coral Triangle’s resources for their food and livelihoods: these are considered as the most direct beneficiaries of the WWF Coral Triangle Program.
“Through this occasion, WWF aims to highlight the importance of our seas in supporting life on the planet and to remind that each of us has the power to reduce pressure and to take action to preserve the Coral Triangle,"" said Dr. Efransjah, CEO of WWF Indonesia. “WWF appreciates the initiative of Mobiliari Group in conveying the message of protecting the Coral Triangle to its members. We believe partnership is key in achieving our mission.”
This year, and in keeping with its theme, the Ball will also be attended by Indonesia’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, as well as WWF Responsible Seafood Ambassador and celebrity chef Bobby Chinn, who will oversee the event’s gala dinner with the theme of sustainable seafood. WWF Earth Hour Ambassador Nadya Hutagalung will also host the event.
“We all have a role to play. As a chef and restaurateur, I am in a unique position to make more people aware of the connection between the marine environment and the fish on their plate,” said Bobby Chinn. “Without key transformative measures from consumers, companies, seafood retailers, and fishing communities, fish stocks will continue to decline and we may not have enough fish resources left in the near future to secure our food and livelihood.”
To help consumers and seafood lovers to choose more responsible seafood, WWF has launched several Seafood Guides in different countries around the world. WWF Seafood Guides use a traffic light system to rate the sustainability of seafood coming from wild-caught and farmed sources with species rated Red (which means Avoid); Yellow (which means Think Twice); or Green (which means Recommended).
“The Coral Triangle hosts spectacular coral reefs and sandy beaches, making it an ideal destination for holiday-makers and scuba diving enthusiasts. It also serves as a centre of marine life and shelters thousands of whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. The tourism industry can make a difference by adopting responsible tourism to ensure the Coral Triangle stays healthy and the industry stays in business,” said Nadya Hutagalung, WWF Earth Hour Ambassador.
The event itself, which is sponsored by MasterCard Indonesia, Mazda Motor Indonesia and The Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta, is a black-tie gala evening. The programme, along with a live cooking demonstration by chef Bobby Chinn and a silent auction, features UK singing sensation Danielle Hope, as well as performances by Los Morenitos, tenor Tarik Akman and professional ballroom dancers Ratih Soe, Fabian Peralta and Josefina Bermudez. More than 300 people will attend the gala dinner.
