WRITING COMPETITION FOR RIAU BASED-JOURNALISTS ON RESTORATION OF TIGER AND ELEPHANT WAS ANNOUNCED
WWF held writing competiton for Riau based journalist since July to October with topic restoration of population and habitat of Sumatran tiger and elephant. This competition aims to build public opinion on the critical situation of tiger and elephant in Riau and find alternative to the problem through mass media. This competiton was held in celebration of National Flora and Fauna Love Day every November 5th. During the three months period, thirteen articles were submitted to the committee.
The annoucement of the winners of the competition was conducted on 4 November 2011. The juries comprises of IGG Maha Adi, the Director of Society Indonesia Environment Journalist, Taufik Ikram Jamil, a Riau Litterateur, and Afdhal Mahyudin from WWF Program Riau had selected five best articles. The best three received cameras of various types while two other nominators recieved external hardisk. This competition also aims to maintain relationship and appreciate media which so far has been intensive to help publish WWF’s work. It is expected that media can play their roles to arise people awarenes on protecting key species in Riau.
The first winner goes to Fedli Azis from Riau Pos with article entitled When a King Lost His Crown. The second best goes to Ira Widana from Dumai Pos with article entitled Lintang’s Scream Wake his Mother Up while the third one goes to Fazar Muhardi from Antara News Bureau. The best fourth and fifth go to Lismar Sumirat from Riau Pos with article When the King of the Jungle no more Roar, and Melvinas Priananda from Tribun Pekanbaru with article Sumatran Tiger Your Present Faith.
During the writing competition winner announcement, WWF also conducted a socialization on the ecology of Sumatran tiger. Sunarto, WWF Species Specialist introduced the ecology and restoration effort of Sumatran tiger before audiences of academician, journalists, university students and NGO. With this introduction, it is expected that public is aware about the conditon of tiger conservation in Riau.
