TECHNICAL GUIDANCE ON THE USE OF THE TRASE PLATFORM
Supply chains for land-based commodities such as palm oil and pulpwood play an important role in Indonesia's economy, but they are also one of the largest sources of pressure on forests, peatlands and biodiversity. The complexity of supply chains involving multiple actors, regions, and stages of production often makes it difficult for the public to trace the linkages between commodity production, deforestation, and socio-environmental impacts. In this context, data disclosure and access to information are key to promoting more responsible supply chain practices.
trase.earth exists as a supply chain monitoring platform that allows the public to trace the linkages between concessions, mills, companies, and production areas of palm oil and pulpwood in Indonesia. The platform integrates a variety of spatial and non-spatial data sources to provide a more transparent picture of supply flows, deforestation risks, and the involvement of key actors in these commodity supply chains.
To ensure the platform is widely utilized, Auriga Nusantara developed a public guidance module designed to help users understand and effectively use trase.earth. The module provides structured explanations on how to navigate the platform, search by company, mill or region, and read and interpret the available supply chain information and risk indicators.
More than a technical guide, this module emphasizes the importance of understanding the context of the data, including source limitations, analysis assumptions, and the implications of using the data in advocacy, research, and policy monitoring. With this module, trase.earth is expected to be utilized by civil society, journalists, researchers, and policymakers as a tool to strengthen transparency, hold businesses accountable, and support the transition to more sustainable and deforestation-free palm oil and pulpwood supply chains.
