INCORPORATING LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN SCHOOL SUBJECTS
Almost every year land fires occur and the impact is felt by the people in Mekartani Village, Mendawai District, Katingan Regency, Central Kalimantan. In this year's fires, SDN Mekartani was closed for almost a month. This land fire incident occurs every year and has a bad impact on health and the smooth running of daily activities for the community.
According to Mrs. Marsini, the principal of SDN Mekartani, the fires that occurred in their location at this time were burning land and forests by people outside the village of Mekartani. Because of the wind and also the fire that spread from underground, the land there caught fire. Currently, the community and the school have been protecting the land and forest together so that the fire does not spread widely in their village. The soil condition is dominated by peat, making it quite difficult for the community to extinguish the fire. So they worked together to put out the fire.
In 2011, teachers at SDN Mekartani agreed to raise the issue of land and forest fires in school subjects. The aim is to provide knowledge about land and forest fires, as well as efforts that can be made to tackle land and forest fires.
After a joint discussion, the teachers decided to include the issue of land and forest fires in class IV semester 2. This was based on the results of the thinking map they made. Where there are three subjects that they can teach holistically, namely science, Indonesian language and civics. From the thinking map, the teachers look for competency standards (SK) and basic competencies (KD) in the Education Unit Level Curriculum (KTSP) which is a national standard. That way, the teachers do not get out of the standards set by the government.
The learning material for the three subjects is changes in the physical environment of the land due to forest and land fires in Mendawai. The learning method provided was to interview farmers about land and forest fires and the impact they felt. After obtaining data, the students made an essay about forest fires until they planted and protected trees in the burned forest by involving the community.
Providing material in this way makes students understand better, said Mrs. Marsini. This can be seen with the essays they made related to forest fires in Indonesian language lessons.
The way of learning that has been practiced in this school is also socialized to schools in the sub-district through the teacher working group (KKG) forum. It is hoped that the number of land fires that occur can be reduced with many schools in the sub-district providing lessons to students and awareness to the community. So that during the dry season, they can still see blue skies and fresh air.
