LAUNCH OF WWF INDONESIA STUDY "PAPUA ENERGY VISION 2050"
Papua Province is the easternmost province of Indonesia which has invaluable natural wealth in the form of a very large forest area with very high biodiversity. With this natural wealth, Papua has enormous economic potential, but it is unfortunate that it is currently not optimally developed.
Power outages and fuel scarcity are common phenomena in Papua. In fact, Papua has abundant and untapped renewable energy resources. Such as mountainous areas and extensive forest cover contain potential sources of water and biomass energy, abundant sunlight contains potential sources of electrical energy and the remains of agricultural and livestock products also contain potential energy sources such as biogas from livestock manure, briquettes from sawn residues or rice husks.
Seeing these conditions, WWF developed an initiative that aims to provide options and input for the Papua Government in providing access and sustainable energy planning in Papua by considering social, cultural and environmental aspects. The options are summarized in the Study "Papua Province Energy Vision 2050: Realizing Sustainable Energy Utilization in Papua". This study was conducted in 5 regions representing 5 types of ecosystems, namely Merauke, Boven Digoel, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Yapen Islands.
There are 8 points of recommendations from this study, namely; a). promote only renewable energy sources as a priority, b). integrate the utilization of renewable energy sources in development planning, c). utilize renewable energy sources in a dispersed pattern, d). increase access to funding for the utilization of renewable energy sources, e). do the development and application of renewable energy technology according to geographical and community conditions, f). input local cultural dimensions in planning and utilization of renewable energy, g). increase the capacity and ability of human resources, h). need to conduct further studies on the potential of renewable energy sources as a whole in Papua Province.
On Monday, June 15, 2015, at the Aston Hotel - Jayapura WWF launched the results of the study and was attended by local governments, practitioners and developers of renewable energy, NGOs, and media. The launch event was officially opened by remarks from the Governor of Papua delivered by Assistant II Secretary of Papua, Drs. Elia I Loupatty, MM where the Provincial Government invited all parties to develop renewable energy in Papua. Director of WWF Papua Program, Benja V. Mambai officially handed over the WWF study book "Papua Province Energy Vision 2050: Realizing Sustainable Energy Utilization in Papua" to the Papua Provincial Government as a joint effort to encourage sustainable energy policies in Papua.
At the launch event, there was also an Interactive Dialogue moderated by Mr. Amir Siregar with the concept of an event like the Indonesia Lawyer Club, with the theme "Realizing Sustainable Energy Utilization in Papua". This interactive dialogue was broadcast live by Jaya TV for 2 hours with broadcast coverage of Papua, West Papua and Satellite TV networks.
As a concrete follow-up to this discussion, the Papua Provincial Government hopes that the study conducted by WWF can be a reference in the preparation of renewable energy development policies and input for the Regional Regulation on renewable energy planning in Papua. Not only the Papua Provincial Government, the Papua DPRD also gave its commitment to support and prioritize the legislative process of renewable energy policies in Papua. The central government, in this case the Directorate of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is committed to encouraging renewable energy investment in Papua.
