KLETING TITIS WIGATI, FOSTERING CHILDREN'S LOVE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
By: Natalia Trita Agnika
Kleting Titis Wigati has been known as a clothing designer through her KLE brand. But who would have thought that this beautiful woman has been directly involved in various environmental conservation activities since she was a child. This was revealed in the press conference of WWF-Indonesia and Galeries Lafayette's #TogetherPossible for a Living Planet collaboration on Friday (25/11) at Pacific Place.
"From childhood, my family has been very supportive of conservation. My family built an urban forest in South Tangerang that is useful for water absorption. We have been concerned about that since the 1960s," said the designer who is familiarly called Kleting. "Since I was a kid, I've been immersed in the sea, so I took my diving license from the age of 12. Now every month, every two weeks, if we can go diving, we dive. And it makes me appreciate the underwater life, about the earth and all kinds of things," he added.
This love for the environment is also transmitted to early childhood through the construction of a nature school called Tanah Tingal School in the South Tangerang area. The school, built by his extended family, is aimed at children aged Playgroup to grade 6 and teaches children to respect the earth more, teaching them how to plant trees, preserve water, introduce types of animals, and so on. "And in the Tanah Tingal School, there are various species of birds that no longer exist in the city," Kleting explained.
Feeling that knowing nature from a young age will lead to a greater love for it, Kleting is happy to be one of the collaborators in the WWF-Indonesia and Galeries Lafayette #TogetherPossible for a Living Planet collaboration. Through her expertise in fashion, Kleting specially designed designs for WWF with an ocean theme, including a scarf, tote bag, and t-shirt. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to marine conservation programs conducted by WWF-Indonesia.
In addition, Kleting will also share with children about the environment through storytelling and activities for children. What's special about this event is that it involves Kleting's niece and her friends who are 12-13 years old as volunteers to tell stories about underwater life because they have a diving group. "If I tell the story (about loving nature from an early age), it's really past tense. But if they tell the story, it will hit home. Children are like sponges, they absorb information quickly," said Kleting.
Kleting's sharing activity will take place at Kids Area Lt. 2 Galeries Lafayette, Pacific Place, Jakarta on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Bring your children, nephews and siblings to hear stories and experiences about the underwater world in the form of storytelling and children's activities. You can also see Kleting's fashion installation and add to your ocean-themed fashion collection.
