FROM KANG OMAN, FOR THE PRESERVATION OF DUNGUSBALANG VILLAGE, UJUNG KULON
Humans were sent down to earth for many reasons, one of which is to play an active role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems on this earth. Nature conservation is an effort to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. This can be done by anyone because everyone plays an important role in conservation activities.
Kang Oman, one of the youth from Cihoe Village, Kertamukti Village, can be an example for all of us. Kang Oman has an important role in the community and government of Kertamukti Village despite his relatively young age (34 years old). He has earned the trust of the community to become a community leader as the Head of RW in Ciawi Village which oversees 3 RTs. In addition, Kang Oman is also a farmer group in Kertamukti village.
The daily life of this father of one is a rice field farmer and Plant Pest Observer (PPHT) for the farmer group in Kertamukti village. Kang Oman has one son who is still in the first grade of elementary school (Ikbal) and one wife (Endang) who enjoys her role as a housewife by part-time guarding her parents' warungan. With this simple life, Kang Oman is a hardworking young man, when the plowing season arrives he becomes a tractor operator owned by his in-laws.
In 2012, WWF-Indonesia initiated the NEWtrees Program funded by PT AVON to rehabilitate land in the Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK) area, precisely in the Katapang Resort, Dungusbalang Block. The implementation of the NEWtrees program sparked Kang Oman's interest to get involved in the program. Armed with the knowledge of the importance of preserving forests that he got from his father who is a retired Jagawana, Kang Oman was motivated to mobilize people who have cultivated rice fields in the forest environment and buffalo farmers who are accustomed to grazing their sheep around the area to participate in forest rehabilitation efforts in Cihonje, Cipatujah, Cirabak, Pamatang Gebang and Ciputih blocks. He did this because the forest is a water catchment area that is the source for his rice fields and village.
Kang Oman plays the role of group coordinator in the NEWtrees Program funded by PT AVON. He is in charge of mobilizing group members totaling 50 households with a rehabilitated land area of 50 hectares and a total of 21,194 plants. Everything is under the supervision, care, monitoring and tagging conducted by the WWF team. In addition, Kang Oman also plays a role in assisting WWF in socializing the NEWtrees program to communities that have not been involved, as well as building cooperation with TNUK Resort Katapang and the Kertamukti Village Government.
"With the NEWtrees program funded by PT AVON, the economy of the community members involved in the activity has been greatly helped, such as to pay for electricity and school fees for their children. Hopefully the NEWtrees program in the Dungusbalang forest funded by PT AVON can provide benefits not only in the role of preserving nature but also for the surrounding community." said Kang Oman.
