INDONESIAN STUDENTS ADVANCE TO WILD WIZDOM QUIZ INTERNATIONAL FINAL
Jakarta, November 6, 2019 - In the spirit of celebrating the National Wildlife Day (HCPSN 2019) which is commemorated every November 5, WWF-Indonesia organized the Wild Wisdom Quiz (WWQ 2019) National Level which was held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 in Jakarta. The WWQ 2019 National Final was attended by 18 junior high school students from three selected schools, namely Sekolah Alam Indonesia, Cikal Amri School, and Tasku Islamic High School, Jakarta. Present as judges were Sampoerna School teacher Stien Matakupan, WWF-Indonesia Communication Director Elis Nurhayati, and WWF-Indonesia Wildlife Ecologist Sunarto.
WWQ was initiated in 2008 by WWF-India with the aim of increasing knowledge about environmental education and the value of biodiversity among students. Similar to WWQ, in Indonesia we know the Cerdas Cermat or Cerdas Cepat program. What's special about WWQ is that it encourages participants to learn about nature's amazing mysteries, thus increasing their curiosity and love for the wild. Along the way, WWQ has been adopted by several countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia as a way to increase public awareness and behavior change through education for sustainable development.
The WWQ 2019 National Finals will compete for the first, second, and third place. The first place winner of WWQ Indonesia 2019 will go on to represent Indonesia at the WWQ 2019 International Final on November 18-22, 2019 in New Delhi, India. In order to prepare well, the Indonesian contingent that will compete at the world level receives intensive assistance from the WWF-Indonesia team.
"Indonesia is a country with the highest level of land and marine biodiversity in the world. Knowing well what are the rich natural resources, as well as the biodiversity of Indonesian species and ecosystems is the simplest way to protect it as a national asset. Unlike other quizzes in the world, Wild Wisdom Quiz participants must really know, think, and care about nature to truly become a champion. But interestingly, WWQ doesn't follow a specific syllabus, it's more like a fun exciting game. Learning while playing.
In turn, young people who know their nature well can use their knowledge to protect the environment and save Indonesia's proud animals and plants. Therefore, seeing the value and benefits of WWQ for the long term, WWF-Indonesia is eager to adopt WWQ in Indonesia because this learning method is quite effective and familiar to the public," Elis Nurhayati explained.
In this national level elimination, the 2019 WWQ Indonesia Champion was Sekolah Alam Indonesia as the first winner. Sekolah Cikal Amri as the second winner, and Sekolah Tasku as the third winner. The first winner of WWQ Indonesia 2019 will become a finalist for the International WWQ event with travel and accommodation costs covered by the committee. Other prizes include a scientific visit to a national park in India and a certificate of participation signed by naturalist and documentary film narrator Sir David Attenborough. At the international level, the Indonesian contingent is vying for the prestigious title of WWQ 2019 World Champion.
