IMPORTANT STEPS TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF LORENTZ MN

Jayapura, November 25, 2010 - The preparation of the Lorentz National Park Management Plan was carried out gradually and comprehensively starting with a series of field studies and initial meetings in the framework of public consultation on the preparation of the Lorentz National Park Management Plan (RPTN Lorentz). The zoning of the area as one of the requirements in national park management was also prepared based on input from participatory mapping with the community and analysis of the biophysical and socio-cultural conditions of the area. Based on the zoning, the draft Lorentz RPTN document was then prepared through the analysis of projections based on the specific ecological and socio-cultural conditions of the community inside and outside the area.
Through this series of processes, it is hoped that an RPTN Lorentz document can be produced that is accommodative and integrated with regional development plans, so that the sustainable management of the Lorentz National Park area in accordance with its designated function can run optimally.
Furthermore, to socialize the draft RPTN Lorentz to the 10 district governments in the area and other relevant stakeholders, a Workshop on Lorentz National Park Management Plan 2010-2029 was held for three days from 23 to 25 November 2010 in Jayapura. The workshop also aimed to synchronize development planning in the Lorentz National Park area between interested parties and the area manager (Lorentz National Park Office), and to develop the Lorentz National Park Strategic Plan for the next 5 years.
The workshop was attended by 50 participants representing district governments within the Lorentz National Park area, representatives of non-governmental organizations, the private sector and representatives of indigenous peoples and other interested parties.
