EARTH HOUR AND SPIDER-MAN JOIN FORCES TO SAVE THE PLANET
Jakarta - For the first time in history, Spider-Man will be the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour, a global movement managed by WWF, with the main mission of inspiring individuals in the world to use their power to become Super Hero saviors of the earth.
Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour, along with Jeff Blake, Chairman Worldwide Marketing & Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment, announced the partnership between Spider-Man and WWF alongside the launch of Earth Hour Blue - a radical digital crowdfunding and crowdsourcing platform for the earth. The platform was launched to encourage people around the world and those who have already taken part to turn off their lights together, which this year will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 8:30 pm CET.
This year, Earth Hour and Super Hero from the highly anticipated movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - along with stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and director Marc Webb - are pledging their support for Earth Hour Blue, with the aim of joining forces to raise funds for environmental missions around the world.
"I'm proud that Spider-Man is the first Super Hero to be trusted as an Earth Hour ambassador, because he shows that we can all be Super Heroes if we realize the power we have," said Andrew Garfield, who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming film. "Earth Hour is a movement that has made an incredible impact around the world, so imagine what we can do this year with Spider-Man's support."
The crowdfunding scheme on the Earth Hour Blue platform will allow supporters to help families in Madagascar by delivering energy-efficient stoves, fund communities in the Philippines to build fiberglass boats so they can weather extreme weather events like Typhoon Haiyan and raise funds to develop and maintain Table Mountain National Park in South Africa, among many other upcoming activities.
"Earth Hour gives you the power to inspire anyone, even if you're just one person, and Earth Hour is more than just one hour. There are so many amazing activities from the community, for the earth, happening all over the world," said Emma Stone.
The director of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Marc Webb was the first celebrity ambassador to launch his Earth Hour Blue activity, an activity that helps WWF Rangers protect Indonesia's endangered animals such as Sumatran Tigers, Elephants, Rhinos and Orangutans and their forest habitats, with more appropriate equipment.
"Earth Hour is a movement that involves many Super Heroes - people who mobilize the power of community to inspire change for the good of the planet. Imagine the possibilities when we come together and do more," said Marc Webb.
The Earth Hour movement has expanded and now hundreds of millions of people from all walks of life across 7000 cities in 154 countries are involved. Jamie Foxx, who played Spider-Man's nemesis in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, said, "The meaning of Earth Hour is not just turning off the lights, but people around the world coming together and working together throughout the year to improve the planet. Never underestimate your power, never underestimate your abilities."
People can also take advantage of Earth Hour's crowdsourcing platform for Earth Hour Blue, which will invite people to cast their vote for the biggest environmental campaigns around the world, such as an Instagram campaign for people to share their concern for the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, as part of WWF-Australia's "Lights Out For The Reef" campaign theme for Earth Hour 2014.
In addition, Earth Hour participants around the world will also be able to sign Shark Saver's "I'm FINished With FINS" shark rescue petition, which involves celebrities and personalities in the Asian region to help end shark finning at sea and the consumption of shark fin soup.
"Earth Hour has expanded beyond what was ever imagined. This year, with the help of Spider-Man, we're taking the movement to the next level. We hope Spider-Man can empower individuals to become a Super Hero to save our planet, and use their vote or money to support causes or campaigns around the world. It's about mobilizing the power of the masses, and this is what Earth Hour Blue is all about," Andy said at a media briefing in Jakarta today (13/2).
Earth Hour in Indonesia is the biggest environmental movement yet, which will involve WWF Warriors and Earth Hour City Champions to drive conservation actions on the ground and through the new Earth Hour Blue platform.
Nyoman Iswarayoga, Communications & Advocacy Director of WWF-Indonesia said, "Since the Earth Hour movement was first launched in Indonesia in 2009, the growth of support from individuals and communities has been extraordinary, especially for a country like ours. Last year alone, 31 independent Earth Hour communities in 31 cities were involved in driving the Earth Hour mission, and these communities have become the new generation of change agents in Indonesia."
Indonesia is one of the world's most digitally and community-driven Earth Hour countries, with a team that continues to campaign year-round under the slogan "This is my action! Where's your action?"
Sony Pictures Entertainment will also contribute to WWF-China's movement and Earth Hour Blue activities by donating energy-saving stoves to prevent deforestation in Panda habitats. Through its efforts, the film studio producing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will receive a carbon offset Gold Standard certification, for its commitment to ensuring the entire physical production of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 through its promotional tour is carbon-free.
Following years of sustainability efforts, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the greenest film production in Columbia Pictures' history. These sustainability efforts, both on and off set, have been supported at all levels - from producers, executives, actors, actresses and crew, since pre-production.
"Spider-Man has always been a Super Hero who is close to the people. Peter Parker is a hero and an inspiration to everyone, so it's only fitting that he joins Earth Hour in empowering individuals to help save our planet," Jeff Blake added. "I'm also very proud that The Amazing Spiderman 2 is completely carbon neutral. We are committed to being as environmentally conscious as possible during production, and we strive to think 'green'and avoid waste. Now, complementing that process with Earth Hour Blue is strong evidence that anything is possible if we all work together."
