CREATIVITY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WITH MEMBERS OF NATURE (MoNa)
"Ups, the wax came out of the pattern," said Salma, a member of Members of Nature (MoNa), with a chuckle while making batik in Cenderawasih Room, Malioboro Terrace 1, Yogyakarta, Saturday, November 30, 2024. Even so, she remained relaxed. Quickly, Salma repositioned the canting in her hand, dipped it back into the hot wax, blew gently to regulate the flow, and scratched carefully over the fan pattern.
Although she has often made batik, Salma's experience this time feels more special. This is because the wax used comes from sustainably produced palm oil, not the usual ones. She had the opportunity to participate in this workshop due to a series of Earth-friendly events with WWF-Indonesia.
The Earth-Friendly Event is an initiative to spread the message that people should use sustainable products. At this event, visitors to Teras Malioboro can participate in an environmental-themed talk show, shop for eco-friendly goods, and even take part in a pound-fit workout with a renowned instructor. The wider community can also watch the excitement of the activities from the broadcast on WWF-Indonesia's YouTube account.
Among the Earth-Friendly Event visitors were Salma and 24 MoNa members who participated in MoNa Camp since the day before. At the members-only camp, they had already learned about sustainable products at Kampoeng Batik Laweyan, Solo. Their journey on November 29, 2024, began with an exploration of the history of the batik tourism village of Laweyan, then a casual chat with craftsmen about sustainable batik. "It turns out, that going towards environmentally friendly batik is not easy. There are many things to consider, such as the use of natural dyes, palm wax, and waste management installations," said Alfa from the Kampoeng Batik Laweyan team who accompanied the participants on the trip.
In the series of MoNa Camp, participants also participated in a talk show Greenterview at The Allabun Lodge, chatted with the WWF-Indonesia team, discussed with local cattle farmers, and enjoyed the beauty of the surrounding nature. At the Greenterview session, MoNa listened to Irfan Bachtiar, Climate and Market Transformation Director of WWF-Indonesia who shared about sustainable commodities and eco-friendly lifestyle. "It's hard to talk about a green lifestyle without action. I have been carrying a tumbler everywhere for years. It's a simple way to encourage others to start," she said.
Some MoNa also shared simple steps that they apply in their daily lives. One of the good-for-Earth habits mentioned was about plastic. Sekti Mulatsih, Plastic Smart Cities Manager WWF-Indonesia, sharing her insights on the plastic problem in Yogyakarta mentioned, "Your trash is your responsibility, but trash is also everyone's responsibility."
After the MoNa Camp, participants continued their activities to the Earth-Friendly Gelaran event where MoNa members practiced the batik theory as well as the environmental knowledge gained from Solo by scratching the night on a fan during the workshop. What's more, this batik moment was accompanied by MoNa Warrior, Asri Welas. In addition, they also listened to a talk show and witnessed the inauguration and declaration of 21 MSMEs assisted by WWF-Indonesia's Sustainable Palm Oil (SPO) Program.
At the end of the event, MoNa members captured memorable moments. From this trip, they have understood the importance of sustainable palm oil derivatives, the role of consumers in a wise lifestyle, and recognize environmentally friendly commodities available in the local market. They also actively share ideas and collaborate to create a positive impact on nature conservation. "WWF-Indonesia doesn't only talk about protected animals, I know there are sustainable palm oil products too," said one of the MoNa.
