THE CONCESSION COMPANIES IN AND AROUND HEART OF BORNEO (HOB) SUPPORTS THE CONSERVATION OF ENDANGERED AND PROTECTED SPECIES
The existence habitat of the endangered and protected species such as orangutans, elephants, rhinos and Proboscis monkey is realized not only in conservation areas, but also surrounding area include concessions. Program to save the endangered and protected species requires the support of various parties, one of which is the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization.
On 23-24 April 2013 was set in Bandung, had held a workshop that discussed “The Importance of Concession Holder in Support The Conservation of Endangered and Protected Species in High Conservation Value Areas in and around The Area of Heart of Borneo (HoB)”. The workshop was attended by representatives of the Directorate-General Directorate of Forestry Business Development of Natural Forest - The Ministry of Forestry, APHI (Association of Indonesia Forest Businessman), the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization, as well as WWF-Indonesia aims to expose the joint understanding concerning the conservation of endangered and protected species which is integrated in a large landscape to support the sustainability of life in the long term; develop the role of certification in support of sustainable forest management and the conservation of biodiversity, including in the National Strategies Area HoB; as well as identify potential incentives and dis-incentives for concession holders that support biodiversity conservation programs.
In these two-days workshop, PT. Kandelia & PT. Bios which are located in West Kalimantan laid out the Proboscis monkey conservation in their concession area. Proboscis monkey has a life group and in need of more or less up to 900 hectares of habitat to their group. The threats faced by the sale of the Proboscis monkey legally in the territory of Ketapang and Kubu Raya Districts. The necessary recommendation is the need for the role of local authorities to enforce the law in the activities of this poaching and preserve some of the old-growth mangrove forest area as a conservation area.
PT. Adimitra Lestari - East Kalimantan also had explained Borneo elephant conservation in its concession area. According to the survey conducted in 2012 noted space habitats Borneo elephant approximately reached 22.836 hectares of the distribution much found in areas river valleys having water sources of salt. Results of the survey determined Agison, Sibuda, Agion and Apan rivers are important for Borneo elephants habitat and this result will use in drafting management plan Borneo elephant conservation.
In addition, WWF-Indonesia, which has a focus on conservation programs of the Borneo orangutan stated a very important role of the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization to the conservation of orangutans and other biodiversity. The orangutans will survive in the long term if there is a protected area, the connectivity of the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization which have certification as well as the habitat of orangutans are adequate. Therefore, it is needed to build the synergy and integrated responsible cooperation between relevant parties.
APHI (Association of Indonesia Forest Bussinessman) in its role of actively campaigning potential incentives and dis-incentives for the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization that support biodiversity conservation programs. APHI also collaborated with TNC (The Nature Conservancy), TBI (The Borneo Initiative), WWF-GFTN (Global Forest and Trade Network) and others are helping improve the performance of the members through the certification of Sustainable Production forest management PHPL) and FSC-SFM (Sustainable Forest Management – Forest Stewardship Council). Currently about 38 of the concession holders or Business License Timber Forest Product Utilization have been incorporated in the APHI’s member with the total area approximately 3.7 million hectares.
In the inference of the workshop agreed upon 4 endangered and protected species on the HoB for a priority, namely orangutans, rhinos, elephants and Proboscis monkey. However, this does not make that other species are not a priority in the process of conservation. Then the plan will be implemented, follow-up discussions on conservation of endangered wildlife management plan and other biodiversity at the landscape scale as well as the mechanism of incentives and dis-incentives.
