CLIMBING MERBABU, A VOICE FOR EARTH
The morning was just beginning at the foot of Mount Merbabu, but the atmosphere around the basecamp climbing trail in Selo, Boyolali, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, was already very busy. Since 07.00, ten members of WWF-Indonesia's supporting community, Members of Nature (MoNa) who were selected to join the membership trip, MoNa Kelana The Series: Mountain, along with several public figures who were appointed as MoNa Warriors, started the series of activities by planting trees with the Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni. This action is a form of commitment to nature conservation that they have held since the beginning of the journey.
After planting the tree together, Minister Raja Juli released the group of MoNa Kelana participants. Cool air and cloudy skies accompanied them on their hike. Although there was concern because of the rain that had fallen a few days earlier, the Mount Merbabu hiking trail that day was friendly: not dusty, the ground was quite solid, and comfortable to walk on.
At Post 1, the encounter with the wild began. While resting, participants were greeted by the presence of several monkeys, a small surprise that warmed the atmosphere. On the way to Post 2, a herd of langurs also appeared in the distance. "It was memorable to see wildlife in its natural habitat," said MoNa Friend, Cathalina Chang.
The wildlife encounter was just the beginning that led participants to discover the true face of nature in the next steps. After Post 2, they found a challenging path with steep and rugged climbs that drained their energy. Tracks without flat spaces are also faced on the way to the summit attack. But, in the end, the fatigue was rewarded by an incredible panorama: a sea of clouds and views of Mount Merapi, Sindoro, Sumbing, and Lawu.
MoNa Kelana is a series of journeys designed to deepen the relationship between humans and nature. By bringing this experience to the participants, it is hoped that each individual can better understand the importance of preserving the Earth and spread the message "no matter how small your action, #LoNgaruhKok" as widely as possible.
The activity initiated by MoNa Warrior Della Dartyan and WWF-Indonesia is also supported by Agoda, National Geographic Indonesia, to Golden Rama Tours & Travel. In this trip, Agoda also has a mission similar to MoNa Kelana, which is to invite travelers to travel while making an impact. This is done by getting involved in rainforest conservation efforts, wildlife monitoring, and tree planting through the Agoda Eco Deals campaign. Meanwhile, National Geographic Indonesia sees MoNa Kelana as an IP (Intellectual Property) that can provide a bigger stage for climate change and women's issues.
Thus, more than just a physical adventure like climbing a mountain, this program opens up space to foster awareness of the importance of protecting the environment through real action. In addition to traveling together, participants also meditated with meditation coach Poppy.
On the way down, participants were invited to pick up trash along the hiking trail. A reminder that loving nature is not only about enjoying its beauty, but also maintaining and caring for it. While mobilizing for the environment, they continued to record on their gadgets for everyone to share.
It was this litter-picking action that made a climber like Fei Febri believe in MoNa Kelana's values and join the trip to Merbabu. "Because I am quite uneasy with the current condition of the mountain, which is dirty everywhere. If one Fei is the only one who spoke, only a group of people would know. But if this is done together and with influencers, it will have a big resonance," she said.
At this MoNa Kelana, each individual seemed to be one with nature, getting to know themselves, celebrating togetherness, and instilling the importance of environmental conservation that will always live in memory. "It feels like going home, not just tired, but also full of heart," said MoNa Friend, Ivana Angelia. The phrase seemed to represent the hearts of other participants who also returned to their routines with meaningful lessons attached.
