BYCATCH PROGRAM: BYCATCH INFORMATION COLLECTION
The vastness of Indonesia's oceans means that thousands of fishermen depend on resources from the ocean. Various types of fishing gear can be found in Indonesia. The Longline and Gill Net fishermen are the focus of WWF-Indonesia's work. Baseline data collection is necessary to determine whether or not an area should be used as a reference for our work.
Some areas such as Banyuwangi, Jember, Dobo, Takalar, Padang, Talaud, and Sangihe Talaud are areas that are indicated to have potential cases of bycatch through Gill Net fishing gear. Apart from the fact that there is a lot of information that sea turtle bycatch is often found, there are several locations that are priority areas for sea turtle nesting.
Data collection activities were carried out by enumerators and observers on board. Each has a different task. Enumerators are in charge of recording all sharks landed at the port, while the on board observers will assist fishermen on the boat in handling turtles or other endangered animals caught in fishing nets.
It is important to ensure that bycatch animals return alive, which is one of the tasks of WWF-Indonesia's Bycatch Program in increasing the survival rate of bycatch animals in fishing activities.
