BYCATCH PROGRAM: BETTER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES (BMP) TRAINING
Turtles and sharks are two marine species that are protected, but have a high risk of being accidentally caught in fishing gear (bycatch). In fact, capture fisheries still frequently bycatch juvenile and pregnant sharks, especially in gillnet and longline gear.
WWF-Indonesia developed Better Management Practices (BMPs)on how to reduce the impact of fisheries on bycatch animals, especially turtles and sharks. Better Management Practices (BMP) is a practical guide published by WWF as a guideline for fisheries actors in conducting the capture and handling process in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner.
We socialize BMPs to fishermen, training them on procedures for handling turtle and shark bycatch. Whether it is injured by fishing gear, or unconscious. BMP training for fishermen is expected to improve the survival of turtles and sharks after they are released from fishing gear. BMP training for fishermen is a form of WWF-Indonesia's assistance to fishermen throughout the archipelago in implementing environmentally friendly fishing processes.
