BIRTH OF BABY ORANGUTAN, NEW HOPE FOR SUMATRAN NATURE CONSERVATION
Amidst the devastating destruction of Sumatra's tropical forests, the birth of a baby Sumatran orangutan provides hope. The female baby orangutan is the first birth in the Bukit Tiga Puluh concession forest area since the collaboration between WWF and partners to manage the 100,000 acre concession area in 2015.
The baby orangutan was born to mother Violet, one of dozens of orangutans reintroduced to Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park. One of WWF's partners, The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) is an international nature conservation organization committed to protecting nature and wildlife, FZS has been working to reintroduce orangutans like Violet to Bukit Tiga Puluh since 2001.
The majority of orangutans reintroduced at this location were confiscated from the wildlife trade and then "schooled" here before being released. They need to relearn forest survival skills so that they can live in the forest. Around 160 orangutans live in the Bukit Tiga Puluh area.
