#BELIYANGBAIK: ENCOURAGE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION OF ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRODUCTS
Jakarta (5/6) - Coinciding with the celebration of World Environment Day today, WWF-Indonesia invites the public to be wise in daily consumption, through a campaign entitled #BeliYangBaik. Not only that, #BeliYangBaik also encourages businesses to produce more responsibly and environmentally friendly. #BeliYangBaik supports the 2015 World Environment Day theme set by UNEP: 7 billion dreams, 1 planet, consume wisely.
The world's population is expected to reach 9.3 billion by 2050. One can imagine the rate of consumption growth that will impact the ecological footprint and threaten biodiversity. Without efforts to reduce the exploitation of natural resources and overconsumption, Indonesia will inevitably face natural resource scarcity and environmental degradation.
Retno Utaira Pantouw, Finance Director of WWF-Indonesia, said, "Good buying can start with 3 simple steps, namely knowing: find out and understand about the background of the product before consuming it, ask: sellers to present environmentally friendly and sustainable products and invite: more people to implement green lifestyle in their daily life"
"Consumers have the power to demand that manufacturers provide environmentally friendly products. Don't doubt our power as consumers, choose only those that are friendly to the preservation of nature!" Retno emphasized.
For this reason, the public is invited to commit by signing the pledge (pledge) #BeliYangBaik through change.org, and visiting the beliyangbaik.org website to get more information about this campaign.
Nugie, a musician artist, also encourages the public to always buy good. As a musician, he expressed it through a song entitled "Start From Yourself". "The lyrics contain instructions on how to change your lifestyle to become a green consumer," Nugie explained.
Nugie is also supported by a series of public figures, including Davina Haryadi, Sophia Latjuba, The Dance Company, Jamaica Cafe, Nina Tamam, Andhini Effendi and Bastian Bintang.
Consumers are now able to choose several products that are more environmentally friendly, including wood and paper-based products labeled Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), palm oil-based products labeled Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and environmentally friendly seafood products. Other products that use environmentally friendly technology can also be an alternative, such as hybrid technology for transportation, as well as recycled products.
#BeliYangBaik is supported by several products that already provide better alternatives, including Tessa - FSC-certified tissues, Toyota - automotive products that have variants of passenger cars with hybrid technology that are more fuel efficient, and Lock & Lock - food and beverage storage packaging that can reduce plastic waste. The campaign is also supported by RSPO and FSC.
