AROY HARUN, THE STORY OF THE FOUNDER OF THE TOURISM AWARENESS COMMUNITY IN PASANEA VILLAGE
White sand beaches are found along the coast in Maluku Province, one of which is located on Pulau Tujuh, small islands located not far from Pasanea Village, North Seram District, Central Maluku Regency. Pulau Tujuh has the potential for beautiful marine tourism, the high biodiversity is also a special attraction for tourists. This has moved Aroy Harun (35 years old), a tour guide from Pasanea Village, to contribute to preserving the beauty that God has given.
Pasanea Village is also one of the villages in the Serutbar (North Seram and West Seram) Coastal and Small Island Conservation Area Candidate (KKP3K). This Conservation Area has been reserved by the Governor of Maluku in Decree Number 329 of 2019. As a young man from Pasanea Village, Aroy feels uneasy about the lack of public awareness in protecting the marine and coastal ecosystems where they live. Every day Aroy still often finds people who make the sea and coastline a place for garbage, even though the sea and beaches are a source of life for 1254 residents, the majority of whom work as fishermen.
Aroy, who works daily to take tourists who want to visit Tujuh Island, is a pioneer in driving change to make people aware of the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems as a source of community life, especially in Pasanea Village.
Departing from the problems that never ended, Aroy began to take action, by approaching the youth in Pasanea Village. Not infrequently diatribes and insults were received by Aroy every day, even Aroy had experienced unpleasant things. The fiber boat that he used to take tour visitors to visit Tujuh Island became the target of the local youth's frustration, but that did not break his spirit to keep fighting to invite the youth in Pasanea Village to take part in protecting the marine ecosystem.
Almost every day I invite my friends to tell me about the importance of protecting the sea and the beach that I live on, so that it can be preserved, but they don't care what I say, instead they just play with their cellphones. ("Almost every day I invite my friends to tell me about the importance of preserving our seas and beaches, but they don't care, instead they just play with their cellphones," said Aroy.
Thanks to Aroy's efforts, eventually the youth in Pasanea Village joined in helping Aroy in his marine conservation efforts and formed the Darwis (Tourism Awareness) Community. This effort is also supported by WWF-Indonesia as an implementing partner of the USAID Sustainable Ecosystems Advance (USAID SEA) Project, since the formation of the Darwis Community, the WWF fisheries enumerator team has provided assistance in every Darwis Community discussion, and provided awareness of the impacts caused if the marine and coastal ecosystems are not maintained.
This is a good start by Aroy and the Darwis Community to have a positive influence on the people living in Pasanea Village. "Beta hopes that the actions you take can continue to be accepted by the community where you live and that the community will increasingly understand the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, if not who else. Let's all take care of the sea and beaches, (I hope that the actions we take can continue to be accepted by the community where we live and the community, increasingly understand about the importance of protecting the marine ecosystem and beaches, if not us who else. Let's all take care of the sea and beaches that we have," said Aroy. With the formation of the Darwis Community in Pasanea Village, the community has become very open to supporting conservation programs such as protecting protected and endangered marine animals from being used for sale or consumption by the community, about prohibiting the use of destructive fishing gear, and supporting the ongoing formation of the Serutbar MPA. Currently, the process of establishing the Serutbar MPA is in the stage of preparing the Zoning Plan and Management (RPZ) document for the proposed designation process which is targeted to be completed in July 2020.
