9TH BORNEO HEART TRILATERAL MEETING
Located at the Four Points Hotel, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, the 9th Heart of Borneo Trilateral meeting was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Malaysia, His Excellency Datuk. Haji Hamim bin Samuri.
The annual Jantung Borneo trilateral meeting was attended by representatives from three countries in Borneo namely; Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia, with the aim of developing a shared vision for green economic development in Borneo. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the people of Borneo as well as several partners and observers from non-governmental organizations.
In his speech, Datuk Hamim highlighted that the 9th HoB Trilateral theme ""Bridging HoB Landscape and Beyond"", is the right time to address habitat fragmentation caused by land clearing for other land needs, and with the strong commitment of the three countries in implementing corridor projects in HoB will make the region sustainable and harmonious. ""Malaysia will always be ready to work together with Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia for greater effectiveness and efficiency through joint implementation under the Heart of Borneo Initiative,"" Datuk Hamim said.
The event consisted of a two-day meeting attended by government agencies responsible for the Heart of Borneo Initiative. At the initial meeting, the representatives of the three countries presented the development of the HoB since the signing of the HoB Declaration in 2007 to date as well as committed to several new initiatives.
The T9 meeting that took place on August 11-12, 2015 resulted in several important decisions that should be followed up. Regarding the HoB corridor project, Brunei Darussalam emphasized that the HoB is a priority area for biodiversity and environmental research in their country, and outlined that Indonesia wants to strengthen cooperation between HoB member countries. On the other hand, Malaysia noted that there is a need to keep the doors of cooperation open to enable more support from stakeholders and local communities.
The meeting also conveyed the importance of the HoB initiative to participate in international and other regional forums to promote the Heart of Borneo Initiative. Overall, the 9th Heart of Borneo Meeting showed that the government's desire to implement this initiative is strong. The next challenge is to maintain the momentum and commitment until the next trilateral meeting which is planned to be held in Brunei Darussalam in 2016.
