WWF WELCOMES GOVERNMENT STEPS TO ENCOURAGE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY
Jakarta - Today (5/12), the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) launched the publication of the "Sustainable Finance Road Map", in order to develop a sustainable Financial Services Industry. This Road Map will be part of the Indonesian Financial Services Sector Master Plan.
WWF-Indonesia CEO, Dr. Efransjah, welcomed the presence of this sustainable finance development roadmap, "This road map is a good step by the government to include the active role of financial services institutions (FSIs) in encouraging efforts to transform the business sector towards a sustainable direction."
"With this road map, WWF hopes that Financial Services Institutions (FSIs) can take advantage of the opportunity to explore innovative products that support the sustainable sector and be used as a preparatory stage for the integration of environmental, social and governance aspects in the core business activities of FSIs," he continued.
The "Sustainable Finance Roadmap" sets out the desired conditions for sustainable finance in Indonesia for the financial services industry under OJK's supervision over the medium (2015 - 2019) and long term (2015 - 2024), as well as to define and set milestones for improvement in sustainable finance. For example, based on this roadmap, in 2015-2016 policies will be developed to encourage FSIs to increase their share of environmentally friendly financing. This roadmap is intended to serve as a reference for OJK and financial services industry players as well as other parties with an interest in supporting sustainable development.
WWF in September 2014, has launched a book entitled "Environmental, Social and Governance Integration for Banks: A Guide to Getting Started". This guide explains operationally how to assess the environmental, social and governance risk exposure of bank products and develop risk management strategies for these three aspects, one of which is by looking at new product opportunities.
This WWF guide can be used as a reference for FSIs, especially banks, to stabilize their practices as a stage of internal capacity building independently in preparation for the implementation of the road map that has just been launched by OJK.
Note to Editor:
On August 26, 2014, OJK and MOE inaugurated the Working Group on Enhancing the Role of Financial Services Institutions in Environmental Protection and Management through the Development of Sustainable Financial Services (Pokja Pembiayaan Berkelanjutan) for the 2014-2019 Period, which is the mandate of the Memorandum of Understanding between OJK and MOE on Enhancing the Role of Financial Services Institutions in Environmental Protection and Management through the Development of Sustainable Financial Services signed on May 26, 2014.
