WE LOVE CITIES 2015
Sunday, February 8, 2015, BPLHD DKI Jakarta together with the DKI Jakarta Regional Government and WWF Indonesia held a campaign entitled "We Love Cities" in order to participate in the city of Jakarta as one of the finalist cities in the Global We Love Cities campaign initiated by WWF in the annual Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC).
The event was held at the main stage of Jakarta's Car Free Day and was opened with several speeches from Nyoman Iswarayoga as the Director of Communication and Advocacy of WWF Indonesia and also Gamal Sinurat as the Head of the Regional Environmental Agency (BPLHD) of DKI Jakarta Province. The We Love Cities campaign aims to invite public participation, especially Jakarta residents to support (vote) and Make Jakarta the Most Favorite Sustainable City in We Love Cities 2015 activities. With the help of several volunteers, people who were enjoying their Sunday morning in the Jakarta Car Free Day area were invited to vote directly for the city of Jakarta with their personal gadgets and could also upload their photos with the Jakarta icon on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #WeLoveJakarta.
The event also featured ceremonial live voting by Nyoman Iswarayoga and Gamal Sinurat who together cast their votes for Jakarta in public. "By making Jakarta the Most Favorite Environmentally Friendly City in this We love cities event, it is hoped that it can help Jakarta later realize the sustainability plans that have been prepared by the local government" said Nyoman Iswarayoga.
Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia has a significant impact in increasing greenhouse gas emissions, therefore it is fitting for Jakarta to apply the concept of an environmentally responsible city and apply sustainable principles so that it can become an example for several other cities in Indonesia. "The concept of Sustainability brought by Jakarta covers many aspects ranging from waste management to plans to reduce carbon emissions from the implementation of public transportation. With Jakarta's participation in the We Love Cities event, hopefully later the community can help support this sustainable regional development program" quoting remarks from the Head of BPLHD.
The We Love Cities campaign was also enlivened with flash mob actions from several dancers and volunteers, as well as musical performances from capital artists, namely Jamaica Cafe and Nugie. Beautiful model Davina as WWF ambassador and some Abang None Jakarta also invited the public that morning directly to support this activity.
The Earth Hour City Challenge activity entitled We Love Cities this year aims to increase the actions and innovations of cities in improving sustainable development and as a form of the city's role in contributing to the issue of climate change. This year, 44 cities from around the world have participated. These cities will compete with several sustainable city concepts each that will be assessed by the jury. The winner of the We love Cities jury's choice will be crowned as The Most Loveable Sustainable City and the winner of the most favorite city is obtained from the number of online votes on the official We Love Cities website conducted by the public. This year Indonesia brought 3 finalist cities namely the City of Jakarta, Balikpapan and Semarang.
