TILAPIA FARMING TAKES CENTER STAGE AT THE OPENING OF THE 5TH AGRESULTS ROAD SHOW IN SUKABUMI
AgResults Indonesia Aquaculture Challenge Project has entered Year 5 last June, which is also the last year of the competition. As part of the Year 5 activities, WWF-Indonesia as the Project Manager again held road show seminars in various regions to encourage technology adoption and technical assistance services for small-scale farmers. Through this activity, the 'competitors' from the private sector are expected to increasingly sell or lease their technology products and provide technical assistance services to increase the productivity of farmers.
The first road show of the year was held on August 7, 2025 at the Sukabumi Freshwater Aquaculture Center (BBPBAT). 23 small-scale farmers, 10 fisheries extension officers, and 5 staff from the Sukabumi District Fisheries Office attended the event..
As part of the road show series, WWF-Indonesia conducted a field visit to one of the small-scale fish farmers in Cisaat District. The visit was also attended by Coco Kokarkin (a member of AgResults Indonesia's Technical Advisory Committee), representatives of the local fisheries agency, as well as four competitors, with the aim of gathering information on tilapia farming practices and challenges faced in Sukabumi. The farmer, who manages a 2,900 m² pond, has implemented auto-feeder and waterwheel technology, doubling the seed stocking density from 5 fish/m² to 10 fish/m² and increasing feeding efficiency, resulting in an increase in yield from 2 tons to 8 tons. However, he admitted that he still faces the problem of Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) disease, which leads to crop failure.
The results of this visit were in line with the theme of the road show seminar held the next day, namely "The Use of Technology and Technical Assistance to Increase Tilapia Aquaculture Productivity."
The road show was opened by the Head of Sukabumi District Fisheries Service, Nunung Nurhayati, S. Sos, KP, M.Si. In his speech, he said that as the second largest district in Java, Sukabumi District has enormous fisheries potential. The local government through related agencies emphasized its commitment to continue to encourage collaboration and synergy between BBPBAT, extension workers, and the community in developing this sector. He also invited participants to make the most of this seminar to increase knowledge and expand networks.
Plt Head of BBPBAT Sukabumi, Muhammad Nurdin, S.Pi, M.Si also attended this activity. "Currently the government is focusing on tilapia development," he said. "Hopefully the collaboration that we build through this opportunity can become a strength and synergy to develop fish farming, while advancing the fisheries sector in Sukabumi District and City."
Dwi Hany Yanti, a representative of BBPBAT Sukabumi, was the main speaker of the seminar. In her presentation, she explained strategies to increase production through extensification and intensification, including the importance of using quality seeds and parents. She also explained breeding programs such as selective breeding and crossbreeding that can produce superior seeds.
In addition, the seminar also highlighted various supporting technologies, ranging from monosex production and super male technology (Nila Gesit), to sterilization methods and modern farming systems. Intensive and biofloc systems were introduced as examples of the application of technologies that can help small-scale farmers improve feed efficiency, maintain environmental quality, and ultimately increase tilapia farming productivity.
At the end of the event, Year 5 competitors also presented their technologies and technical assistance services to small-scale farmers. For the first time, the competitor presentation session was organized in a hybrid manner, so that competitors who could not attend in person still had the same opportunity to introduce their technologies and technical assistance services. A total of eight competitors participated, with PT Venambak Kail Dipantara, PT Bumi Wirastaraya Sejahtera, CV Prima Eco Aquaculture, and CV Republik Vannamei presenting offline, while PT Banoo Inovasi Indonesia, CV Cahaya Teknik Prima, Aceh Aquaculture Cooperative, and PT Aqubeta Dipo Jaya followed online.
This road show will continue to be an important means to encourage technology adoption among small-scale farmers as well as for competitors to introduce innovations, reach a wider market, and strengthen relationships with farmers.
